July is UV Safety Month.

With Minnesota experiencing high temperatures this week, it's a timely reminder that protecting yourself from the sun is an important part of staying healthy while enjoying the outdoors.

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can increase the risk of skin cancer, sunburn, and heat-related illness. Simple steps—such as wearing sunscreen, seeking shade, staying hydrated, and wearing protective clothing—can make a significant difference.

Tomorrow, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and honors the ongoing pursuit of freedom, justice, and equity.

As public health professionals and health educators, it's important to understand that health is influenced by more than individual choices. Historical and present-day social, economic, and structural factors continue to shape health outcomes and opportunities within our communities.

Juneteenth provides an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, celebrate the resilience and contributions of Black communities, and recommit ourselves to advancing health equity for all.

At MN SOPHE, we remain dedicated to supporting public health initiatives that promote inclusion, equity, and the opportunity for every individual and community to thrive.
