St. Marys Masonic Lodge 109

St. Marys Masonic Lodge 109 We are St. Marys Masonic Lodge #109 - A lodge of Free and Accepted Masons working under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Georgia.

Freemasonry is kindness in the home, honesty in business, courtesy toward others, dependability in oneโ€™s work, compassion for the unfortunate, resistance to evil, help for the weak, concern for good government, support for public education, and above all, a life-practicing reverence for God and love of fellow man. We hope you will return soon and often so that you might stay informed.

We had a fantastic day at our Annual George Washington Memorial, Open house and Teacher appreciation lunch.

Thank you to everyone who came out to be part of it. We welcomed Brothers and guests from all over โ€” from as far as Statesboro to our close neighbors at Camden Lodge #476, along with friends from Tybee Island, Hinesville, Nahunta, St. Simons, Brunswick, Ocean Lodge No. 214 F & AM, and Callahan.

The day was well represented, with two DDGMs in attendance, as well as members of the York Rite, Knights Templar, Scottish Rite, Shrine, and Eastern Star.

It was a great show of unity across the Masonic family.

We were especially glad to see neighbors and community visitors join us for our Open House and luncheon, taking the opportunity to learn a little more about who โ€œthe guys in the Blue Buildingโ€ really are.

There was the Famous Lasagna by Tom and Clemencia Chapman and and an amazing salad bar that would rival the best.

A special thank you to our guest speaker, St. Marys historian Kay Westberry, who shared rich insight into our cityโ€™s history โ€” highlighting the Masonic influence woven among its founders and the lasting role those early Masons may have played in shaping St. Marysโ€™ future.

Alas! Congratulations again to our Teacher of the Year, Cassie Griffis, whom we were proud to honor.

Thank you to Ashton Brittain of Brunswick High School for playing taps while The Glynn Academy MCJROTC Color Guard presented Colors.

Bro. Jones delivered the Toast to the Flag & Bro. Chad Hullinger delivered the historical account of the first ever memorial.

During the luncheon, everyone recieved an entry for door prizes. Raffle prizes include an Authentic Replica of the Ceremonial Trowel used by Washington for cornerstone ceremonies!

That item combined with other raffles, St. Marys Masonic Lodge 109 was able to raise funds to help support the Masonic Home of Georgia and CCHS FBLAโ€™s Sadieโ€™s Closet.

Statesboro to Camden. York Rite to Shrine. Neighbors to lifelong Brothers. Today wasnโ€™t just a memorial โ€” it was fellowship, charity, and community under one roof.

We honored a great American and Master Mason.

We recognized a great teacher.

And we supported Georgiaโ€™s youth.

St. Marys Lodge #109 โ€” still building.

Did you know? During WWII, the blue Forget-Me-Not flower became a secret symbol for Freemasons in N**i Germany. With Masonic lodges banned and members persecuted, this modest bloom was worn discreetly to recognize each other in silence and solidarity. What looked like a harmless flowerโ€ฆ was an act of quiet defiance.

UPDATE: While thereโ€™s no verified proof that Freemasons used the forget-me-not during WWII to secretly identify one another, the story still holds weight because after the war, German Freemasons did adopt the flower as a symbol of remembrance.

References:

1. 1926 Introduction
The Grand Lodge Zur Sonne (in Bremen) began distributing Forget-Me-Not pins at its annual meetingsโ€”not for secrecy, but as a reminder of charity and fellowship.

2. 1934 Symbolic Use
Bayreuthโ€™s โ€œGrand Lodge of the Sunโ€ shifted from the square and compasses to the Forget-Me-Not as a subtle lapel symbol when N**i anti-Masonry intensified.

Memorial Day has connections to Freemasonry through several historical figures and traditions, though it's not exclusively a Masonic holiday.
Some notable connections include:
Historical figures: Many Civil War generals and political leaders who were instrumental in establishing Memorial Day were Freemasons. For example, General John A. Logan, who issued General Order No. 11 in 1868 officially establishing Decoration Day (the precursor to Memorial Day), was a Mason.
Masonic participation: Masonic lodges have historically participated in Memorial Day ceremonies, often conducting graveside services for deceased members and participating in community memorial events. Many Masonic cemeteries hold special ceremonies on Memorial Day.
Shared values: The Masonic emphasis on remembrance, honor, and service to country aligns naturally with Memorial Day's purpose of honoring fallen military personnel.
Local traditions: In many communities, Masonic lodges join with other civic organizations in Memorial Day parades and cemetery services, reflecting their commitment to community service and patriotic observance.
While Memorial Day is observed by all Americans regardless of affiliation, the Masonic tradition of brotherhood, service, and remembrance has made lodges active participants in many Memorial Day observances across the country. The holiday's themes of sacrifice, honor, and remembrance resonate strongly with Masonic principles
