THANK YOU for your emails, calls, and SHOWING UP IN PERSON to speak tonight!

YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE….but it’s NOT OVER.

Our volunteers will update you on what steps to take next — we fully expect this to be back at the next Commission meeting, because has ALREADY SIGNED OFF ON IT!!!

🚫Public lands should NOT be transferred into private hands. The NPS faced STRONG public opposition to its 2024 land exchange proposal, which moves an unknown number of acres of public lands into private, fee-simple ownership — with NO restrictions on development identified.

🌳Cumberland Island National Seashore was intended by Congress to remain protected from private interests and potential development. The NPS was entrusted with that responsibility.

🏢The Seashore’s enabling legislation states: “the Seashore shall be permanently preserved in its primitive state, and no development of the project or plan for the convenience of visitors shall be undertaken which would be incompatible with the preservation of the unique flora and fauna or the physiographic conditions now prevailing”

🤝The agency has positioned this exchange as an acceptable compromise — but we assure you, it is NOT! Compromise has already been achieved: first in 1972, again in 1982, and in subsequent sales or agreements with its affluent private residents.

🚨 TONIGHT at 6:00 PM, the Camden County Commission is scheduled to consider a “Letter of Support” for land exchanges on Cumberland Island National Seashore. The National Park Service has previously proposed moving an unknown number of acres of public lands into private, fee-simple ownership — with NO restrictions on development.

🚫 Public lands should NOT be transferred into private hands — PERIOD. The agency has positioned this exchange as an acceptable compromise — but we assure you, it is NOT!

💸 Let Camden County Commissioners know that if the NPS plans to allow development on Cumberland Island, you will NOT be back to Camden County.

‼️Take action now. Urge Camden County Commission to DENY or TABLE the current NPS request until potential legal issues have been resolved.

🚘 PLEASE attend the meeting if you are local! It’s happening at 6:00 PM TONIGHT at the Government Services Complex, 2nd Floor (200 East Fourth Street, Woodbine, GA).

✍️ You can also email the county clerk (link in bio).

URGENT!! ONLY THREE (3) DAYS TO STOP DEVELOPMENT ON CUMBERLAND ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE!

🚨 The National Park Service (NPS) has requested a “Letter of Support” from Camden County Commissioners for a land exchange on Cumberland Island National Seashore — and the Commission is expected to make its decision THIS TUESDAY NIGHT (March 17)!

🚫 Public lands should NOT be transferred into private hands! The NPS faced STRONG public opposition to its 2024 land exchange proposal, which moves an unknown number of acres of public lands into private, fee-simple ownership — with NO restrictions on development identified.

🌳 Cumberland Island National Seashore was intended by Congress to remain protected from private interests and potential development. The NPS was entrusted with that responsibility.

🏢 The Seashore’s enabling legislation states, “the Seashore shall be permanently preserved in its primitive state, and no development of the project or plan for the convenience of visitors shall be undertaken which would be incompatible with the preservation of the unique flora and fauna or the physiographic conditions now prevailing”

🤝 The NPS has positioned this exchange as an acceptable compromise — but we assure you, IT IS NOT! Compromise has already been achieved: first in 1972, again in 1982, and in subsequent sales or agreements with its affluent private residents. These families already negotiated their terms with the federal government — they don’t get to do it again!!

‼️Take action now! Urge Camden County Commission to DENY or TABLE the current NPS request until potential legal issues have been resolved.

⛴️ Let them know that if the NPS plans to allow development on Cumberland Island, you will NOT be back to Camden County.

✍️ You have only three (3) days (that’s until March 17) to comment - contact the Camden County Clerk using the link in our bio now!

Every time Cumberland Island and its Wilderness has been threatened by development in the past — the public has rallied together to save it.

Can we make that possible again?

We need you (and everyone you know) to let the National Park Service know what you think about its proposal to develop Cumberland Island National Seashore and Wilderness.

If we don’t exhibit the restraint necessary to ensure that places like Cumberland Island remain undeveloped now — none will remain in the future.

Visit wildcumberland.org for guidance on how to submit your comments & additional information before the agency’s deadline on Saturday Feb. 21, 2026.

The National Park Service (NPS) has proposed significant changes to Cumberland Island National Seashore and its Wilderness — though visitors wouldn’t have any idea. After all, there’s NO visible signage.

We need YOUR help to reach public before it’s too late! The public comment deadline ends 2/22/26.

Please help spread the word — find a link to the agency’s proposed Visitor Use Management Plan, public comment guidance, and more at wildcumberland.org.

The public has historically rallied to save Cumberland Island — over and over again.

The National Park Service’s newest proposal expands development, infrastructure, and commercial activity on one of the wildest and most biologically diverse islands in our country.

Cumberland Island contains one of the largest remaining maritime forests remaining on the entire East Coast, and provides important habitat for countless protected and migratory species.

The agency’s proposed Visitor Use Management Plan (VUMP) will have serious ramifications for visitors, but also for threatened and endangered species…and it fails to account for impacts to other rare and imperiled species, including state-listed species, migratory birds, freshwater-dependent species, and other species of conservation concern.

The NPS is currently proposing to more than double daily ferry visitation, add a retail store, campsites, beach pavilions, bathrooms, & associated utilities; authorize & extend bicycle & e-bike use (including Class III); increase commercial services; and create new Management Zones, including a “Private Interest Zone” that could administratively allow development on lands that were mandated to be preserved in its primitive state.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Let the NPS know what you think about its plans before the deadline ends on Feb. 21!

Georgia’s coast — its network of barrier islands, marshes, and estuaries — are a shared public resource.

We are fortunate that our state’s leadership, decades ago, was dedicated to ensuring a balance between its use and its protection for future generations.

As part of that, Georgia’s largest barrier island was accepted into the National Park System, and for more than 50 years it has been a haven for visitors from across the globe who are seeking a respite from what seems to be an increasingly faster pace.

Every time Cumberland Island and its Wilderness has been threatened by development in the past — the public has rallied together to save it.

Can we make that possible again?

The National Park Service (NPS) has extended the public comment period for its newest proposal, a Visitor Use Management Plan (VUMP), until February 21, 2026.

It proposes drastic changes that are contrary to@its entire purpose, including:
⛴️ More than doubling daily ferry visitation to 700 passengers per day;
🏪 Adding a retail store on island;
⛺️Adding campsites, beach pavilions, bathrooms, & associated infrastructure / utilities;
🚲 Authorizing & extending bicycle & e-bike use (including Class III);
🧾 Increasing commercial services;
🥾Changing “desired conditions” for visitors & use;
🚧 Creating new Management Zones, including a “Private Interest Zone” that could administratively allow development on lands that were mandated to be preserved in its primitive state; and more!

Most Cumberland Island visitors are seeking solace from an increasingly fast-paced, technology-driven, commercialized society.

It was intended by Congress, its enabling legislation, and the Wilderness Act to gradually evolve into an increasingly wild, less-developed island. As retained rights expired, more of the island was intended to revert to its natural state.

The agency’s proposed Visitor Use Management Plan (VUMP) moves in the opposite direction: it expands development and commercial activity on one of our country’s wildest and most biologically diverse islands.

Congress, recognizing that the enjoyment by future generations of the national parks can be ensured only if the quality of park resources and values is left unimpaired, has provided that when there is a conflict between conserving resources and values and providing for enjoyment of them, conservation is to be predominant.
