Hello APTCP! We wanted to provide an opportunity for our members and followers on social media to engage with one another. We will be posting some terms regarding deterioration of stone and masonry and we want to hear from YOU!

Each post will have a definition and example of a specific deterioration pattern - that’s where you can voice your own experiences. Have an image of a particularly nasty example? Have a good story on how you overcame a puzzling condition? Have something that still has you baffled? Post it in the comments and share your experiences!

Today we will look at a masonry and stone issue that we all know too well - CRACKING

A crack is defined as an individual break, clearly visible by the naked eye, resulting from separation of one part from another of a solid piece of material without breaking into separate parts.

Cracking comes in all shapes and sizes; fractures, hairline cracks, crack networks, faults, and splitting. As we all know, cracking or fissures can be related to a host of underlying issues like rusting of ferrous material, structural issues, settling, and many others. Cracking can also lead to numerous issues such as material displacement (fault) and eventual loss.

Now we want to hear from you! Give us some examples of the condition, before and afters, methods used to fix the issue, or questions you may have on how to solve the problem. Post your own photos and stories in the comments!
