Sudbury students had fun with St. Louis teaching artist Andrea Tharian! We enjoyed exploring a mosaic project—sketching out a drawing, picking out paint chip colors, cutting paper, and gluing them onto our sketches. ✂️ Classes and workshops at Sudbury are optional. Students sign up in advance for them and are welcome to stay as long as they want for the class. We encourage them to be clear with the instructor though if they are going to leave. And it’s required to help clean up! 😊

Three Saint Louis Sudbury School students recently practiced a plethora of executive function skills while researching, registering, onboarding, and studying for online college courses with Arizona State University! Sudbury students are taking on-demand courses in biology and anatomy as well as live online courses in drawing. This is Sudbury's first year partnering with Arizona State University's Universal Learner Courses program and we're excited to support our teens with this new experience!

☀️ Sudbury students ages 6 to 17 have been enjoying a busy first month of school in our new space in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis. Here are some student highlights from our very full days!
— Helping each other propose and maintain rules and policies to keep our group safe
— Putting together a desert biome
— Learning about school committees and voting in elections for committee chairs and co-chairs
— Making tiramisu and navigating what to do when a student eats some of the ingredients before the dessert is assembled
— Experimenting with adjusting a recipe so that it is vegan and gluten free
— Figuring out how to not always "rescue" a friend from being responsible for their actions (like cleaning up after themselves)
— Researching plant seeds and propagating plants
— Advocating for oneself by requesting a special use permit to use during IRL time (no tech time)
— Writing Restoration Committee support slips, notes, and agenda items
— Starting an online college course with Arizona State University
— Prepping the aquarium for new fish
Exploring exhibits, activities, and a film about life in the ocean at the Saint Louis Science Center
— Playing outside
— Making art
— Decoding and solving riddles in a scavenger hunt at Carpenter Branch Public Library
— Finding snails and learning how to care for them
— Making a card for someone who just retired
— Learning about sound with a teaching artist from The Sheldon and Saint Louis Science Center
— Agreeing on solutions together that are safe enough to try to improve interpersonal conflict and rule breaking
— Being responsible and independent in keeping our school clean
—Observing and caring for the Sudbury crested gecko
— Enjoying ceramics and art classes
— Leading a science club and learning to ask for help

Sometimes you need a little reading help from a friend, adult volunteer, or staff member! 📚 Reading opportunities are everywhere at Saint Louis Sudbury School and it’s great to see younger students asking for help and learning from older students and adults to read the instructions on their macaroni and cheese, to figure out a science experiment, to read agenda items, to read a recipe when making a dessert in the kitchen, to play a game, to sign up for chores, to research different kinds of seeds, to read instructions for building a desert biome, and much more.

Hooray! 🎉 Congrats to a Sudbury student for parallel parking on her road test (among many other skills) and getting her driver's license! 🚗 Over the last year, Sudbury students have been watching her study for the written exam, seeing her at the wheel of a car in the morning, hearing her talk about being nervous, and sharing the joy of her accomplishment. 💙

Tiramisu! 💙 A Sudbury student helped organize a cooking activity with peers and a staff member. So much thinking and communication skills went into the experience! The activity included researching the recipe and budget, figuring out how to make one tiramisu vegan and gluten free, buying the ingredients, reserving the kitchen, remembering to start (😄), adding fractions, negotiating who would do what, insisting on handwashing, adapting to different kitchen tools that we had on hand, reminding people to stop eating the ingredients, experimenting with flavor and texture, realizing that it needs to chill overnight (oops), cleaning everything, and finally the next day… enjoying the yumminess! 🥳

Classes and workshops at Sudbury are optional! 💙 Sudbury students ages 8 to 17 recently came together to experience The Sheldon and Saint Louis Science Center’s presentation of their SOLID Project (science of learning instrument design) featuring the amazing teaching artist Syrhea Conway. We learned that sound is vibration, how sound waves work, and how a sound’s frequency and amplitude can be changed. Thank you to Ameren and the Les Paul Foundation for making this fun program free for Saint Louis Sudbury School! ⭐️ We can’t wait for the next session. 🎶

What is a typical day at Saint Louis Sudbury School? 😄 We have some scheduled activities like morning announcements, School Meeting, optional classes and workshops, field trips, clubs, advisory meetings, outside time with a volunteer or staff member, and committee meetings throughout the week. 🌎 For much of the time though, Sudbury students learn how to manage their own day, initiate activities with others, pursue their interests, and figure out what lights them up! ⭐️ Here are photos of recent Sudbury moments of discovering snails in the yard and figuring out what they need to live; hearing different points of view from peers ages 9 to 17; facilitating a meeting; voting on a budget item; cleaning and caring for our school; a 6 year old and 17 year old learning about plants together; making musical instruments; playing Pictionary with people of 3 generations; writing; proposing ideas; negotiating rules of game play; exploring our neighborhood; and finding all the flowers. 🥰

Students voted to continue IRL Time (in real life time) every Wednesday afternoon this school year. This is a time when no tech use is allowed except for school administrative or committee work. The tech free time is designed to foster different experiences and people coming together. 💙
New this year is a special use permit! 🥳 Students fill out request forms and bring them to School Meeting where they ask the school community if it’s okay to use technology for a specific purpose and for how long. Recently a student went through the special use permit process because he wanted to use the desktop computer to research the seeds he brought in. Another student wanted to listen to music when crocheting because it helps her focus. ⭐️ It’s exciting to see Sudbury students learning the why behind the rules, advocating for themselves, planning ahead, and playing an active role in making what they want to happen… happen!

Sudbury students had a fun visit to the St. Louis Public Library Carpenter Branch! 📚 We enjoyed a scavenger hunt filled with decoding, riddles, searching, and matching. Plus, students spent a fair amount of time figuring out how to divide up the work among people of different ages, what to do when you feel frustrated, how to ask for help, and finding ways to cheer each other on. Thank you to Carpenter Branch library specialist Colin for all your help and encouragement! ⭐️
