In the St. Louis region you may see plantings of this iris along roads or on grounds of older homes.

This iris is a species iris native to Greece and Turkey and it loves the Midwest.

It is the spuria iris ‘Orientalis’. It can be sulky when newly transplanted and you might have to wait a couple of years for it to get established to bloom, but when it does bloom it is a nice display, coming after tall bearded iris season.

Today for Flag day, we can enjoy two red white and blue Iris designs made by youth in the Washington Iris club.

These simple designs are strong and effective.

Black irises are very popular with a segment of iris growers.

There’s a new black iris on the market, introduced this year by Jim Hedgecock in Missouri. It is certainly on my list to order!

Plant exchange event!

Corrected date: June 21

Plan to attend our plant exchange on Sunday, June 21 at 1 PM. It will be part of our regular meeting of the Greater St. Louis Iris Society. Our meetings are held at the commerce Bank Educational Center on the campus of the Missouri Botanical Gardens at 4651 Shaw Blvd, St Louis, MO.

Our meetings are open to anyone, you do not need to be a member. We would love to see some new faces there!

There may be a few Iris exchanged, but our plant exchange is for ANY type of plant. Bring a spare cutting, or seeds, or rooted or unrooted plants. Your excess plants are someone else else’s treasure.

Hope to see you there.

What plants are best interplanted with iris? We call them “companion plants” because they grow near iris, enhancing their visual impact.

We like Lilium, peonies, daylilies, phlox, and cosmos.

Let us know which companion plants you use in your garden.

What should you be doing now with your iris plants after bloom?

* deadhead the blooms (don’t let seedpods form)
We want our iris plants to put their energy into growing leaves and rhizomes, not seeds

* snap off stalks at the base
Stalks can get wet and mushy, sending wetness down into rhizomes leading to rot

* gather up brown, dead leaves and remove from your iris bed
Keep beds clean and dry

* keep green leaves growing and strong
Don’t cut healthy green leaves—they feed the rhizomes for next year’s bloom

“Pansy Face” describes a color pattern in Iris flowers that resembles a favorite cottage flower, pansies.

See how these iris with their dark spots on the falls remind us of pansy flowers?

These pseudata iris are in bloom at the Missouri Botanical Gardens now.

As bearded iris season winds down, the later blooming iris such as these are showing themselves.

These pseudata iris, Yari and Okagami, are reliable bloomers in our St. Louis region.

Pseudata Iris are a cross between Iris pseudocorus and Iris ensata. “Pseudata" is combination of both names.
