The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, also known as H.R.1, created work requirements for some people on Medicaid. The Act allows states to give short-term exemptions from the work requirement, for example, to people who are hospitalized or living in a disaster area. States like Nebraska are already implementing these exemptions for their needy residents. Missouri's failure to adopt the exemptions may prevent people from getting necessary medical care.

The attorney will provide civil legal representation to clients in Franklin, Lincoln, Montgomery, Warren and Washington counties, with a primary focus on family law matters involving survivors of domestic violence, as well as housing and consumer issues. The attorney will also assist with community education.

This is a hybrid position, with three days per week expected in the Union office.

Legal Services’ Neighborhood Advocacy Program is wrapping up a multi-year legal effort to transform a particularly tough block in the Marine Villa neighborhood of South St. Louis.

The idea behind this work is simple: a little legal pressure, applied strategically and in a concentrated area, can take a street from worst to first. These homes were once vacant and deteriorating - dragging down the block and creating problems for the people who continued to call it home. Today, they’re both shining examples of what neighborhood-based legal advocacy can accomplish.

We don’t just litigate cases one property at a time. We use the law strategically to remove barriers to investment, create opportunities for redevelopment, and help neighborhoods build momentum. These formerly vacant homes, both on the same block, now better symbolize the beauty, resilience, and potential of the City of St. Louis.

Says Managing Attorney Peter Hoffman, “Very proud of these outcomes and our Neighborhood Advocacy team.”
