Bridge the Gap 314, Twyla Lee, and JuneteenthSTL mourn the passing of our dear friend and community leader, Mayor Reggie Jones.

For Twyla, this loss is deeply personal. She is grateful for 20 years of friendship with Reggie a friendship that, along the journey, grew into a powerful partnership and ultimately helped create the JuneteenthSTL Festival and Parade, which blossomed into one of Missouri’s most iconic Juneteenth celebrations.

Reggie, thank you for believing in our founder and trusting Twyla to represent you, your brand, your leadership, and the City of Dellwood. Your friendship, partnership, and belief in the vision will forever be part of our story.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Jones family, the City of Dellwood, Boys and Girls Club Staff past and present Club Members and everyone touched by his life and leadership.

Thank you for 20 years of friendship, Reggie. Thank you for believing in us. Your legacy will live on.

Today is a day of celebration for me but for a different reason.

Today is my dad’s birthday! 🎉

He’s a true Fourth of July baby, and I’m grateful to celebrate another year of his life.

For many, today is Independence Day.

We all have the freedom to celebrate what holds meaning for us. As an African American woman, however, my perspective is different.

While the United States declared independence in 1776, people who look like me did not experience freedom in the same way. For our community, that journey to freedom came much later 161 years ago, not 250.

History offers several answers to the question of when freedom truly came for enslaved African Americans.

Historians often point to three significant dates:
• January 1, 1863 – Emancipation Day
• June 19, 1865 – Juneteenth
• December 6, 1865 – Ratification of the 13th Amendment

For me, I choose to honor June 19, 1865 Juneteenth because it represents the day freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Texas and has become a lasting symbol of liberation, resilience, and hope.

Whatever you choose to celebrate today, take a moment to understand your why. Knowledge gives meaning to our traditions.

Discover how JuneteenthSTL in Dellwood, started in 2021, has evolved from a local effort to one of the most anticipated Juneteenth celebrations in North St. Louis County, honoring heritage and community.
