Welcome to the Genetic Study of Smoking page! Dr. Laura Bierut in the Psychiatry Department at Washington University School of Medicine is conducting a large-scale genetic study to explore why some people smoke and others do not. We are seeking current cigarette smokers between 25-44 years old to participate in this important study. Participation involves a 60 minute survey and donation o

f a saliva sample. Participants will be paid $25 for their time and will be offered the opportunity to receive their genetic ancestry information, a $99 value, from 23andMe, the largest DNA ancestry service in the world. Additional information about 23andMe and the ancestry results they provide can be found at www.23andme.com. Cigarette smoking is a serious public health problem responsible for over 480,000 deaths a year in the United States. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death. We hope the knowledge gained from this study will result in more effective prevention and treatment strategies for smoking, leading to reduced rates of devastating diseases like cancer, heart disease, and lung disease.
