Oh the places we can go...especially when there is history, gardens, and inspiration. Hillwood Historic Estate, Museum, and Gardens is delightful as we welcome a new season.
Marjorie Merriweather Post left a legacy of elegance and beauty in Washington, DC.
Although the fall leaf color has not begun to evolve, the buds on the mums were waiting to burst into bloom, the ambiance was worth the visit. Hillwood is the perfect place to be in the City, yet feel a sense of calm...especially in the garden.

This event coincides with the opening of the Mellon Jewel Collection designed by Jean Schlumberger.

Do you grow Colchicum autumnale?
It’s a wonderful addition to my fall bulb garden beds.
The autumn crocus is a toxic, fall-blooming perennial plant that grows from an underground corm and resembles a true crocus. Even though it is supposedly toxic … my 6 cats never go near it.
And I truly enjoy the foliage it produces in the spring (see last photo). Colchicum grows in zones 4 through 9. It thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers rich, well-drained loam, chalk, or sandy soil; sharp drainage is critical to prevent corm rot!!! Plant dormant corms about 3 to 6 inches deep and 6 inches apart in late summer.
