Engineers Without Borders - SLU Chapter

Engineers Without Borders - SLU Chapter We frequently volunteer around the local community as men and women for others. We are currently mentored by the EWB Gateway Professional Chapter.

EWB- Saint Louis University Chapter strives to develop sustainable engineering projects that will allow the communities we serve to better meet their human needs. Engineers Without Borders (EWB) uses engineering as a way to help improve the communities it serves by helping them meet their basic human needs. As an organization at a Jesuit university, the Saint Louis University (SLU) Chapter volunte

Hello!!

Today is SLU’s fourth annual Giving Day. This annual 24-hour day of giving (from 12AM today to 12AM tomorrow) is SLU’s biggest fundraising event of the year, and it brings the SLU community together in support of important projects across the University.

As the SLU Chapter of Engineers Without Borders, we are looking for donations to support our mission to bring clean and reliable drinking water to Esther House, a children’s home in Kapenguria, Kenya. We would use your support towards the purchasing of construction materials as well as travel costs for our chapter to implement the project.

There are a couple exciting things happening this year with SLU Giving Day. Firstly, Stephen Myers (CSB ‘70) has offered to donate $100,000 once 250 donors are reached!
“I hope my involvement and financial support to the University will help instill the same spirit of giving in the next generation,” Myers said. “It is important to pay it forward, and I hope future generations continue this tradition of supporting the institution that has given us so much.”

Also, as a special thank you, SLU will be sending out Billiken koozies to donors who make a gift of $60 or more on SLU Giving Day. You are able to split your gift into multiple designations or just one!

If you feel so inclined to support our project, the donation link is: https://givingday.slu.edu/.

Thank you for your support towards our chapter! We will use all donations towards the progress of providing drinking water to the community at the Esther House.

Let's show the world all the good SLU can do in just 24 hours.

An open letter to anyone interested in supporting EWB:

To whom it may concern,

My name is Alyssa Brown and I am writing on behalf of Engineers Without Borders-Saint Louis University Chapter. The global mission of Engineers Without Borders is to build and develop sustainable communities by implementing engineering strategies and projects, as well as creating leaders and enriching their global perspective. Our chapter at St. Louis University is a student organization that has around 30 engineering students, ranging from biomedical to electrical, and public health majors. We strive to use our degrees to improve and enhance the quality of life in communities, both locally and globally.
Over the past two years, we have been developing our international project, where we are partnering with an orphanage called the Esther House, in Kapenguria, Kenya, to build a clean water source for their community. In our first trip to the Esther House, called the Assessment Trip, we gathered data, formed in-person relationships, and collected necessary measurements to begin the development process of our project. We determined they have a reliable source of potable water from a present spring, but have no reliable means of distribution or storage. From this assessment trip, we established a 5 year contract dedicated to implementing a solar powered pump and water distribution system for this community.
Since our assessment trip in August 2018, our chapter has been hard at work designing a solar-powered water distribution system for the community. However, we are unable to proceed with implementation until enough funds have been raised for materials, and we need your help. As a fundraiser, the club has decided to make Engineers Without Border shirts with logos of all the companies that have sponsored this project. These shirts will be given out to all students in the organization at SLU and will be worn during our monthly volunteering around the St. Louis area, while traveling abroad, and will be given out as prizes to other fundraisers.
Therefore, we are asking local businesses to sponsor our EWB project through donations. If a donation greater than $100 is made, we will put the company logo on our shirt, and if a donation greater than $300 is made, a large logo will be put on the shirt. I am writing to you today in hopes that your company will consider sponsoring our project, or allow us to set up a time to present our project to you and answer any questions you may have regarding our organization. Please help us bring a clean source of water to this Kapengurian community, and contact our organization at [email protected] for more information on how to contribute to our project.
Thank you for taking your time to read about our project, and we thank you in advance for any time and consideration you put forward in your decision of sponsorship.

Thank You,

The Saint Louis University Chapter of Engineers Without Borders

Engineers Without Borders needs your help to fulfill our mission to bring clean, reliable drinking water to children at Esther House, a children's home in Kapenguria, Kenya. EWB is asking friends, family and the SLU community to support this endeavor and help raise $5,000 to complete this mission. The money raised will go to a new tank, rain collection, solar-powered pump and distribution systems.

The overall partnership goal with the residents of the Esther House is to have a self-sustaining system that provides sufficient, accessible, and good quality water for the community members year-round so that water-spread illness is reduced. We are designing and implementing a clean reliable water source for an orphanage of 20/30 children and their surrounding community.

"The knowledge that we’re working on something important that will help real people motivates us to work harder and inspires us to think more creatively. And an innovative person who works hard for others is someone I absolutely hope to become.” Maggi Richard, sophomore mechanical engineering major and EWB-SLU

We will be traveling back to Kapenguria very soon to build this water system and educate the community on how to use it and continuously test the water. Please help us be men and women for others and give now.
