✨ Curator Picks are here.

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Route 66, America’s iconic “Mother Road. ” The Open Road: Endless Horizons invites photographers to reflect on the road as more than a place, but as a symbol of history, movement, resilience, and possibility.

For generations, Route 66 has represented migration, ambition, reinvention, and connection, shaping landscapes, communities, and stories that continue to inspire us today.

These Curator Picks highlight a selection of powerful entries that capture that spirit through landscapes, architecture, intimate moments, and personal journeys. Together, they explore how the idea of the open road continues to shape who we are and how we connect, wherever we are in the world.

📸 There’s still time to enter. Share your perspective and be part of this global celebration of wanderlust, discovery, and the enduring legacy of the road.

Please note: Curator Picks are selected from competition entries and do not necessarily reflect the final jurors’ decisions regarding awards or exhibition inclusion.

4 Lessons from Helen Levitt

Before “street photography” was even a category, Helen Levitt was quietly capturing the poetry of everyday New York, kids in masks on a stoop, neighbors leaning out of windows, chalk drawings on the sidewalk. She didn’t chase drama. She noticed it.

Here’s what her work still teaches us:

1️⃣ Pay attention to everyday life. The best stories are usually unfolding right in front of you.

2️⃣ Let life happen naturally. Authenticity comes from observing, not controlling the moment.

3️⃣ Stay interested in people. The more curious you are, the more meaningful the details you’ll find.

4️⃣ Don’t chase only the extraordinary. Impact doesn’t need spectacle, subtlety can hit harder.

The lesson underneath all of it? Slow down and look. The ordinary is full of extraordinary moments if you’re paying attention. 🤍

Which lesson hits home for you?

Duane Michals, one of photography’s most original voices, has passed away at the age of 94.

At a time when photography was largely concerned with documenting reality, Michals used the medium to explore something deeper: memory, desire, spirituality, mortality, and the complexities of human experience. Through sequences, multiple exposures, and handwritten text, he expanded the boundaries of what a photograph could communicate.

For more than five decades, his work challenged viewers to look beyond what was visible and consider what was felt.

“I want to know what something feels like, not what it looks like.”

His influence can be seen in generations of artists who followed, and his work remains a reminder that photography can be as poetic and philosophical as it is visual.

Rest in peace, Duane Michals (1932–2026).

4 Lessons from Richard Avedon

He stripped everything away, no props, no sets, just a white background and a face. And somehow that made his portraits unforgettable.

1️⃣ Focus on the person, not the setting. Strip away the noise and character takes over.

2️⃣ Less is more. Strong work usually needs fewer elements, not more.

3️⃣ Authenticity beats flawlessness. Real emotion is more memorable than polished perfection.

4️⃣ Keep experimenting. Growth comes from questioning your own style.

Which lesson are you taking with you? 👇

Today we mourn the loss of photographer, educator, innovator, and friend Jeff Schewe.

For decades, Jeff shared his extraordinary talent, technical brilliance, and generous spirit with photographers around the world. A pioneer in digital imaging and fine art printing, he helped shape the tools and workflows that countless photographers rely on today while never losing sight of the artistry and humanity behind the image.

Jeff was an inductee into the Photoshop Hall of Fame, recognized for his pioneering role in the development and advancement of Adobe Lightroom and modern digital imaging workflows. His influence can be found not only in his own remarkable photography, but also in the tools, techniques, and creative possibilities embraced by photographers everywhere.

He was also a founding member of the International Photography Hall of Fame’s International Advisory Council and a treasured friend of IPHF. We were honored to work with Jeff on lectures and workshops, most recently during the outstanding program he presented at the 2025 Hall of Fame Induction event in Indianapolis.
Beyond his immense accomplishments, Jeff was known for his willingness to share knowledge, mentor others, and encourage photographers at every level. Whether working with fellow artists, students, or software developers, he approached every challenge with curiosity, generosity, and passion.

Jeff’s images, teachings, writings, and kindness leave a lasting mark on the photographic community. He will be deeply missed, but his generous spirit and remarkable legacy will continue to inspire generations of photographers to come.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the worldwide photographic community today.
