Yesterday, our executive director, Heather Grantham stepped into the role of art teacher! She taught our summer enrichment campers all about Pop Art, and they discovered that bold colors, creativity and a little surprise can make ordinary objects extraordinary!

It may come as no surprise that Dr. Grantham is singularly qualified to teach this class. She has a degree in art history along with a master's in deaf education and PhD in psychology.

Happy Flag Day from CID!

111 years ago today, on June 14, 1915, Dr. Max Goldstein called the first meeting of the CID board of trustees to order. The group adopted Articles of Incorporation and began raising funds for the first CID school building, completed in 1916.

This picture shows the new building proudly flying an oversized American flag on the occasion of the first federally authorized Flag Day, June 14, 1916. This was the date President Woodrow Wilson formalized the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the U.S. flag by resolution of the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.

FOR CID HISTORY BUFFS: In its first year, the original CID school building served 40 deaf children and 11 teachers of the deaf in training. It was located on Euclid Avenue, which extended farther south than it does today, 15 years before an expressway (now I-64/40) cut a swath through St. Louis' central corridor. In 1926, the original building was connected by a courtyard to the back of a new school building designed to accommodate basic and clinical research, professional education and burgeoning enrollment.

The original building was razed in the late 90s to make way for the current CID campus.

This week, the enrichment camp crew practiced silly voices, sang silly songs, threw an Unbirthday Party, played Flamingo Croquet and worked on their lines, costumes and set. Led by CID teacher (and camp director) Kelly Wood, they discussed "the beautiful privilege of imagination and how to balance the worlds of reality and wonder."

Today, we enjoyed their epic performance of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (The Melodramatic Version!), an adaptation by Brenden P. Kelso, Playing With Plays, LLC.

It was so great!
