Pontifical Mission Societies - Archdiocese of St. Louis Supports the missionary work of the Catholic Church around the world The Mission Office aids the faithful of the Archdiocese of St. The Archdiocese of St.

Louis in their support of the missionary work of the Catholic Church around the world. One of the primary ways the Mission Office does this is through the support of the Pontifical Mission Societies. The Pontifical Mission Societies are a worldwide network at the service of the Holy Father to sustain the mission and the young Churches through prayer and charity. In his encyclical Redemptoris Missio, St. John Paul II says, “This must be our motto: All the Churches united for the conversion of the whole world” (84). The four Pontifical Mission Societies are: Society for the Propagation of the Faith, Missionary Childhood Association, St. Peter the Apostle, and Missionary Union of Priests and Religious. “The Societies bring to the Catholic world that spirit of universality and of service to the Church’s mission, without which authentic cooperation does not exist” (Redemptoris Missio 84). Today is World Mission Sunday. Pope Pius XI established the day in 1926, and this year the Church celebrates its centenary.

Pope Leo XIV’s message for this year carries the theme “One in Christ, united in mission.” He asks the whole Church to renew its unity in Christ, since the unity of His disciples is directed toward mission “so that the world may believe.” He also thanks missionaries who leave home and family to bring the Gospel to difficult places and asks the faithful to keep them close in prayer.

The Apostolic Penitentiary has granted a plenary indulgence for World Mission Day. It is open to the faithful who receive Holy Communion and pray for the spread of the Gospel throughout the world, under the usual conditions: sacramental confession, prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, and detachment from all sin. Confession may be made a few days before or after. The indulgence may also be applied to the souls of the faithful departed.

Please pray for missionaries today and support the World Mission Sunday collection in your parish or at the link in our bio.

Pope Leo grants plenary indulgence for the 100th World Mission Sunday!

Following today's Angelus, Pope Leo said:

"Dear brothers and sisters,

Today we celebrate the 100th World Mission Day. Let us think of how much missionary history has unfolded over these one hundred years! Let us pray that the Church may always remain faithful to the mandate of the Risen Lord: “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation” (Mk 16:15).

I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I have truly sensed your support. Thank you!

I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital.

This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity.

Now that I have overcome this delicate phase, as you know, I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers.

Thank you once again. Thank you all! Have a good Sunday!"

Your prayers and practical support, particularly on World Mission Sunday, will be a great help in bringing the Gospel of God’s love to everyone, especially the poorest and those most in need."

"On Oct.18, I ask Catholics throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis to pray for missionaries and the communities they serve. Pray the World Mission Rosary that Blessed Fulton Sheen gave to the Church. And when the World Mission Sunday collection is taken up in your parish, please give generously according to your means."

We continue our prayers for Pope Leo's recovery!

Doctors at Gemelli Hospital removed a cancerous tumor from Pope Leo XIV’s right lung, according to the Holy See Press Office. The surgery was successful, with no complications, and the Holy Father has returned to his hospital room.
We ask the faithful to continue praying for Pope Leo’s recovery and for the doctors and staff caring for him. We also hold in prayer all who are living with cancer, their families, and those who care for them.
