Friends Peace Teams in Asia West Pacific Join us as we build friendships among people committed to living peacefully across a diversity of ages, cultures, religions and backgrounds.

Friends Peace teams in Asia West Pacific builds friendships, person to person, among people committed to living peacefully across a diversity of ages, cultures, religions and backgrounds. Friends Peace Teams is a spirit-led organization working around the world to develop long-term relationships with communities in conflict to create programs for peace building, healing and reconciliation. FPT's programs build on extensive Quaker experience, combining practical and spiritual aspects of conflict resolution. The Asia West Pacific Initiative of Friends Peace Teams has partners in Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand and is exploring other areas. We support people through healing and friendship: building schools that bring communities together through developmental play based programs, working with community members through the Alternative to Violence program and simply bringing people together to get to know one another and just visit. Last year, our community in Bantayan Island finished our first Bantayanon children’s book Ang Akon Mga Amigo kag Amiga sa Dagat (My Friends Under the Sea). Mayâ Learning Space in Bantayan Island, Cebu, has been a space for reading and play to both children and adults in the island for the past two years. With a big, plain and flat space, this year, Mayâ Learning Space has prepared to grow its outdoor play area with friends within the Bantayan Island community and also from outside the island. Moments like these remind me of my encounters with my FPT AWP friends when I trained with them on the meaning of living without violence. They taught me how to be resilient in the face of adversity and how to speak up for justice amidst disasters caused by human greed. I am deeply grateful that, despite these difficult and limited circumstances, I was still able to reach out to several individuals and humanitarian organizations to be present in my community and neighborhood. The challenges I continue to face include limited facilities, environmental conditions, and maintaining consistency amidst circumstances that are not always supportive. Sometimes I feel tired and alone. But every time I see the children, I remember why I started. The children love the stories. They enjoy being invited to gather, spend time together, and hear positive things. Some even ask when I will come back. That gives me strength.

I have begun providing consultation services to parents to help them create home-based support programs for their children. I currently have four clients, some of whom are from Pati and Yogyakarta. This process is going well. The parents and I communicate and reflect every three weeks about their child’s progress and development. Several other parents have expressed interest in developing home-based support programs in consultation with me.
