Botswana Renewable Energy Fellowship
Green Africa Youth Organization-GAYO Botswana

In 2024, thirty-five university students in Botswana began a bold journey to become the country’s next generation of renewable energy leaders. The Botswana Renewable Energy Fellowship was designed to equip participants with the skills, tools, and networks needed to drive climate action and clean energy innovation.

Backed by experts from both the U.S. and Botswana, the program included a kickoff workshop in Gaborone, a 15-module Green Leaders Academy course, and targeted sessions on renewable energy and project design. Students began developing their own community-based energy projects with plans to showcase their work at a 2025 public symposium.

Though the program was unexpectedly discontinued due to a change in U.S. administration priorities, the passion, leadership, and initiative of the participants remain a powerful reminder: youth are ready to lead the transition toward a greener, more sustainable future—regardless of the obstacles.

“I used to think addressing environmental issues was solely the responsibility of governments and large organizations, but now I believe individuals play a crucial role in making a difference. Small, everyday actions—like reducing single-use plastics, conserving energy, and supporting eco-friendly practices—can collectively create a powerful impact on the health of our planet.”

Environmental Leader: Hadonia Manurung
Country: Indonesia

“I collaborated with the Ministry of Forestry and Environmental Republic of Indonesia and Institut Hijau Indonesia on an initiative called Green Leadership Indonesia, contributing to our social project titled Kaum Muda Menanam (“Youth Planting Movement”). This project took place in the Bukit Suligi forest area from August 10–16, 2024, with over 50 enthusiastic participants.

During this time, my team and I conducted a training session on Social Ecological Justice, drawing from insights gained through the 10 Billion Strong Green Leaders Academy program. Our goal was to inspire and empower participants to transform their love for the environment into meaningful and impactful actions.”
