Along with the very heavy topics of his time, Bill Hungate also received every day and lighthearted mail, clippings, and recordings. One found in the collection, S0813, is this "Recipe for a wonderful day" which calls for ingredients such as "Friendly Words," "Understanding" and "Gentle Humor."

Interested in Winston Churchill and America's National Churchill Museum? William L. Hungate (S0813) kept publications, background, correspondence and legislation on the permission and funding required to create the Winston Churchill Memorial and Library at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. Pictured is one such publication from the Political Series, circa 1974.

From the 1970's, here are 3 letterheads sent to, and used by Bill Hungate (S0813). Bill is using red font for effect! The Albu Dairy Farm, is using the black-and-white print for modern pictures, while the City of Louisiana's black-and-white letterhead is instead like a classic engraving style illustration.

Former congressional representative and federal judge Bill Hungate (S0813) was a prolific writer. On top of his songs, like 'Down at the old Watergate' and 'Agnew', he wrote two memoirs, a joke book, and gathered evidence for yet another book, all in the 1990s and 2000s. "A Man of Letters (with malice towards some)" is an epistolary, a book told through the letters written during Bill's stint as a rifleman in World War 2, including his abruptly ended term at ASTP (Army Specialized Training Program) and his work in the formation of the 95th Infantry's 377th Regimental Headquarters Dance Band during his time in Europe.

A large chunk of Representative Hungate's collection (S0813) consists of materials concerning Watergate and Richard Nixon. He received mail from innumerable constituents as well as people around the nation because of his position on the House Judiciary Committee. His office tallied the public's stance daily during the impeachment inquiry! Some letters were more colorful than others, such as this anonymous note.

The Saint Louis Research Center is saddened to learn of Jack Harvey's recent passing. Harvey was the longtime owner of K*k Sool Won-St. Louis, one of the oldest martial arts schools in the St. Louis area. He donated his school's records in 2022, documenting his decades-long martial arts career. Bill Hungate's collection (S0813) contains a great deal of his campaign materials. Many of which lean towards the humorous, borderline absurd. One such item is this Certificate of Non-Dinner, which states, "a Non-dinner was held at which no speeches were made ... preceded by a Non-reception at which No refreshments were served." The certificate is signed by 'Moore Cash' and 'Earnest Lee Solicited'.

The 4th panel of the 5 held in the William L. Hungate Collection (S0813) has a more serious tone in its conservation symbolism. The space themed cartoon comes from the Soil Conservation Service, US Department of Agriculture sub-series and was drawn by artist Felix Summers in 1965.

Cattle and palm trees featured in the 3rd of 5 panels from the Lincoln, Nebraska Soil Conservation Service! Drawn in 1965 by Felix Summers, the promotional materials made their way into Representative Hungate's Agencies files, which are now held in the Political Series of the William L. Hungate Collection (S0813)

These Department of Agriculture comics from 1965 are excellent examples of editorial cartoons. The message of conservation comes from the Soil Conservation Service, US Department of Agriculture sub-series and was created by artist Felix Summers. This is the 2nd of 5 panels held in the William L. Hungate Collection (S0813).

We found Ag comics! This is 1 of the 5 panels from a 1965 set of government-commissioned art held in the William L. Hungate Collection (S0813). The space and farming themed artwork comes from the Lincoln, Nebraska Soil Conservation Service, US Department of Agriculture and artist Felix Summers.

As a US Representative, Bill Hungate (S0813) often connected with people of status and power. The Photograph series contains images of Lyndon B. and Lady Bird Johnson, Senators Ed Long and Stuart Symington (C3872), and of course, our beloved Senator Tom Eagleton (C0674), but now it is time for the sports fans to rejoice.
Professional athletes often have statuses rivaling even those of political legacies. Hungate is seen here shaking hands with Kansas City Kings player Nate “Tiny” Archibald. The second photograph is Hungate with Representative James Symington (S0433) and former St. Louis Cardinals player Stan “The Man” Musial.
