Trailnet

Trailnet Your local advocate for better biking, walking and transit. 🚲 šŸ‘£ šŸš Trailnet provides bicycling and livability programs and events to diverse groups of people.
(1)

Hallmark programs include Safe Routes to School, Earn 2 Bikes, TravelGreen, Classics Rides, and Cultural Tours.
-Trailnet’s outreach and engagement activities reach individuals from all demographics, backgrounds, and socioeconomic categories, confirming that active transportation is for anyone and everyone.

-We help make non-motorized commuting a feasible choice for anyone.

-All of our programs

focus on educating and encouraging people of all ages to travel throughout their community on bike and on foot. Active, vibrant communities are healthier and safer.

-Trailnet’s Classics Rides (previously Bicycle Fun Club) is one of the most active bike event programs in the nation and serves up to 10,000 recreational bicyclists annually.

-Our TravelGreen program engages and educates those ready to make the switch to active transportation by using their bikes for more than recreation. We build and nurture commuter networks that move people closer to their goals – whether it’s to become healthier, save money, protect the environment, or just to have fun.

-All Trailnet programs respond to the shocking statistics that 2/3 of all American adults are either obese or overweight. This holds significant economic value since this ā€œweigh-inā€ increases the cost of health care for everyone, impacts attendance at work and school due to related illness, and increases fuel usage because vehicles are carrying more weight. Trailnet assists municipalities in designing streets, sidewalks, and trails that allow and encourage people to walk and bike safely through their community.

-Trailnet’s community planning team works closely with community leaders, residents, and stakeholders to create safer, healthier, and more active communities.

-Between 2001 and 2011, more than 688,000 pedestrians in the U.S. were injured – a number equivalent to a pedestrian being struck by a motorized vehicle every 7 minutes. In Missouri, bicycle related injuries represent more than 10% of all roadway injuries. These numbers present an imperative need for communities to address the safety of all their citizens.

-To date we have partnered with 26 municipalities, creating plans that attract and retain residents, stimulate economic development, and improve community health. Trailnet’s Healthy, Active and Vibrant Communities (HAVC) initiative was created in partnership with the Missouri Foundation for Health. It provides opportunities and access to healthy, active living for residents of urban, rural, and suburban communities.

-Trailnet’s HAVC initiative focuses at the policy level to produce the farthest-reaching and longest-term solutions to obesity, especially in low-income communities. It includes proven strategies of policy change affecting the built environment and building social networks around healthy lifestyles.

-The HAVC initiative has received national recognition as an ā€œemerging interventionā€ that holds promise for replication. It’s been developed in 11 diverse communities in St. Louis and across the state.

-Trailnet staff participates in federal, state, and local policy advocacy, working with partners to draft and file policy, educate policymakers, and promote health- and safety-related initiatives to the public.

-Trailnet participated in the passage of two recent St. Louis City ordinances: the Form Based Code ordinance that creates more walkable, bikeable communities, and the Safe Streets ordinance that protects people who walk and bike from endangerment and assault.

This month’s Trailnet Champion is Hobo Hub Works, and its owner and operator, Matt Steward. 🚲

Through affordable used bikes, welcoming community rides, and a belief that biking should be joyful and accessible to everyone, Matt is helping build a stronger, more connected cycling community here in St. Louis. From rescuing old bikes from landfills to creating a ā€œthird spaceā€ for people to gather and connect, Hobo Hub Works is a reminder that bikes can be so much more than transportation; they can create friendship, freedom, and belonging.

We’re grateful for Matt’s partnership, his support of Trailnet’s work, and his commitment to making biking more welcoming for riders of all backgrounds. Head to the comments to read more!

Tour de Stooges was just a little over three weeks ago, but we’re still basking in what fun it was! 575 people registered to enjoy riding in the beautiful area around Lebanon, IL, and apart from the brief hail, it was an incredible day filled with joy on two wheels, new friendships, and great laughs. Ride photos by the incredible Dan Singer Photography are up; head to the comments to check them out.

Rides are an important part of our work. They help normalize biking as transportation, encourage healthy, active, and vibrant lives, and remind people just how joyful and community-centered riding a bike can be. Seeing hundreds of people out riding together is more than just fun — it’s a glimpse of the kind of connected, people-centered communities we’re working toward every day. ā¤ļø

Thank you again to Pickle Juice Sport, Fitz's, Great Rivers Greenway Gateway East Trails, McKendree University, and Bike Surgeon Cycling for helping make this ride happen!

Our next Classics ride is I Scream for Ice Cream, on Sunday, June 28 in Edwardsville. We have a Family Ride at 10 miles, and then 24, 34, and 51 mile rides. There’s something for everyone! It’s one of our most popular rides each year; you can register in the comments. We hope to see you there!

Though we’re still tallying numbers, it’s pretty safe to say that this year’s Bike to Work (or Wherever) Day was a smash success! THANK YOU to everyone who stopped by a station on Friday, and to all our station partners who were up early to serve snacks and refreshments to people on bikes. We can’t thank you enough 🫶

It was a delight to see families on bikes (including kiddos strapped into cargo bike, complete with helmets on!), folks hauling serious amounts of gear, and we were encouraged by the many great conversations we had with residents.

Many shared that St. Louis’ growing bike network is giving them more confidence to get out and about on their bike, and some shared that they finally feel safe to go biking as a family thanks to protected infrastructure like the Tower Grove Connector. How incredible it is to hear that! ā¤ļø

Bike to Work (or Wherever) Day is about celebration, encouragement, and awareness. It’s a reminder that when communities invest in safer, connected infrastructure, more people feel empowered to choose biking for transportation, recreation, and everyday life.

It’s also a reminder that the cycling community in St. Louis is bigger than you’d think. It’s filled with commuters on their way to work, people who ride just to enjoy the beauty of our City, others who are out for the health benefits or are chasing new PRs, families enjoying time together, people running errands, and a whole host of other reasons, all good and valid!

There’s room for everyone in the cycling community, and we can’t wait to cheer you on at next year’s Bike to Work (or Wherever) Day — and every day before then too.

Nothing ruins a ride vibe faster than hearing that dreaded psssssst. šŸ˜… 🄲

But here’s the good news: fixing a flat tire is absolutely something you can learn to do yourself, and it’s a great bike skill to have in your back pocket.

In this video, Jude will walk you through the basics of changing a flat tire step-by-step, so you can feel more confident the next time you ride hits a bump in the road.

And if any of our Bike Month content has helped you, taught you something new, or simply made biking feel more accessible and welcoming, today is Give STL Day! Donations to Trailnet help us continue building a region where walking biking and taking public transit are a way of life for everyone. Even $5 can make a difference! Head to the comments for the link to give. ā¤ļø

In all 50 states, people on bikes have the right to use the road. That means you can expect to see them just about anywhere; on your street, near intersections, on the way to work, or running everyday errands.

As more people choose to bike, especially as the bike network across St. Louis continues to grow, those everyday moments are only becoming more common.

That’s why awareness matters. Sharing the road starts with noticing: if you’re driving, keep an eye out for people on bikes, take a second look before turning, give space when passing, and check before opening your door.

Expect people on bikes everywhere. When you do, everyone gets home safer.
