Today, on World Braille Day, the Foundation is reflecting on how one bold innovation reshaped accessibility worldwide.

That same spirit drives our work — funding breakthroughs that advance treatments and cures, and championing the tools, resources, and inclusive practices that make everyday life more accessible for people with blinding diseases.

Today we celebrate White Cane Day—a day recognizing the independence, empowerment, and achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired.

On White Cane Day, we’re proud to highlight some of the accessibility features in our Trenton and Berkeley facilities that support our employees:
• Metal floor tracks and hanging PVC pipes help maintain straight paths through our warehouses
• High-contrast tape alerts workers to head-level or protruding obstacles
• Cubbies above lines provide safe cane storage
• Bumpers / pool noodles are utilized to protect the body against sharp objects particularly at shin, waist, and head level

Celebrating 25 Years of Service: Honoring Clint Cruse’s Legacy at Lighthouse for the Blind – St. Louis

This year, Lighthouse for the Blind – St. Louis celebrates the career and retirement of Clint Cruse, our Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer, who has devoted 25 years to advancing our mission and strengthening our organization.

Since joining the Lighthouse in 2000, Clint has been the driving force behind our manufacturing operations. Overseeing two St. Louis–area production plants—one producing medical kits, devices, first-aid and emergency supplies, and adhesives; the other producing aerosol and liquid paints, adhesives, cleaners, and disinfectants—he has led a team of over 100 employees and six direct reports across supply chain, production, quality assurance, health and safety, and maintenance management.

As COO, Clint has balanced P&L accountability for multimillion-dollar annual revenue with our social mission to create meaningful employment opportunities for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. His leadership has resulted in the addition of jobs for visually impaired individuals; an increase in sales, the integration of four business acquisitions and the management of major capital projects.

Clint’s strategic thinking, ability to anticipate outcomes, and dedication to tangible achievements have left a lasting mark on our organization. Under his guidance, the Lighthouse has not only thrived as a manufacturer but has also become a model for how socially responsible businesses can compete, grow, and innovate.

One of Clint’s greatest legacies is the culture he fostered—a culture of shared purpose, values, and success. His leadership has empowered employees at every level, inspired innovation, and extended our Blind Community Enrichment programs throughout the St. Louis region.

As Clint retires, we honor his extraordinary contributions and celebrate a stronger, more inclusive Lighthouse for the Blind – St. Louis he leaves behind. His impact will continue to be felt in every product we produce, every employee we empower, and every community we serve. From all of us at Lighthouse for the Blind – St. Louis: thank you, Clint, for 25 years of leadership, vision, and heart. We wish you the very best in your next chapter.
