Eastern Missouri Climbers Association (EMCA) began on December 28, 2020, when Dan Provasnik started a Facebook group that grew into an all-volunteer Local Climbing Organization and later a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on access, stewardship, and responsible development in Eastern Missouri.
In five years, EMCA has opened or actively stewarded eight climbing areas, including Sage Mountain, Shepherd Mountain, Robinson Bluff, Astral Valley, Silver Mines, St. Francois State Park, Boogerboo Bouldering, and multiple areas within Mark Twain National Forest. During that time, EMCA established 335 total climbs, including 65 routes, with 12 new sport routes added this year.
EMCA became Missouri’s first LCO to initiate formal conversations with Mark Twain National Forest, hosted the state’s first Adopt-a-Crag event, launched its first gym-to-crag program, and supported statewide access through Mountain Project administration. The organization has also completed trail work, installed safety stations and mussy hooks, relocated the waiver station at St. Francois State Park, hosted festivals and cleanups, partnered with climbing gyms, and led two climbing outings with the Girl Scouts of America.
Five years in, EMCA remains focused on stewardship, access, and long-term climbing development, with new trails and routes planned for 2026.
