What keeps a community partner coming back? The people.

Recently, members of the Bunge team brought their food truck to Peter & Paul Community Services. They shared freshly prepared meals and meaningful moments with residents at our Community Campus.

But behind the meals is something even more important: connection.

“What keeps our team coming back is the people. Sharing a meal creates a simple but powerful connection, and volunteering at Peter & Paul allows us to see firsthand how much those moments matter," shared Tammy Lin Bratton from Bunge, speaking on behalf of herself and the Asian Professionals of Bunge team.

At Peter & Paul, we believe community partnerships are about more than a single day of service. They're about showing up, building relationships, and recognizing our shared humanity.

We're grateful to the employees at Bunge who continue to make space for those connections.

Because being more than a shelter means being part of a community that shows up for one another.

Thanks to our St. Louis community, more than $3,000 was directed to PPCS through the Target Circle Community Giving Program!

Every vote was an opportunity to support our neighbors experiencing homelessness, helping sustain the shelter, housing, and supportive services that make a difference throughout the year.

As we prepare for the colder months ahead, we're reminded that meaningful change happens when a community comes together.

To everyone who voted, shared, and supported PPCS: thank you for showing up for your neighbors.

Together, we're building a community where everyone has a place to belong.

FALSE: People staying in shelters don't have jobs.

In fact, more than half of the residents at our Emergency Shelter are employed.

Having a job doesn't always mean you can afford a home. Rising housing costs, unexpected hardships, and a lack of affordable housing can all contribute to homelessness.

There's no single face of homelessness, no single reason someone experiences it, and no one-size-fits-all solution.

Let's get uncomfortable. Let's challenge our assumptions. Let's solve homelessness together.

What do we do about homelessness?

It’s a question our community is asking, and there are no simple answers. But there are some truths we can agree on to start.

The first of those being, no one should have to sleep outside.

“That should make us uncomfortable," Anthony D'Agostino, CEO of PPCS, writes in a recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch op-ed.

At the same time, residents and business owners deserve safe, thriving neighborhoods. These goals are not in conflict. They depend on one another.

Addressing homelessness requires us to have honest conversations, acknowledge the genuine concerns of our neighbors, and recognize the unique challenges facing our region.

The solution isn’t importing another city’s model. It’s building a St. Louis-specific strategy that fits our community and its realities.

Perhaps most importantly, Anthony reminds us that "homelessness is not inevitable.”

Read Anthony’s full op-ed and his thoughts on what it will take to build a St. Louis-specific strategy to reduce homelessness.

The Post-Dispatch Editorial Board recently asked readers for their thoughts on solutions for homelessness in the region. Among those who responded was Anthony D’Agostino, CEO of the nonprofit Peter & Paul Community Services, who said St. Louis faces structural challenges many communities do not.

"St. Louis is one of only two major U.S. cities without local control of its police department and one of only two independent cities separated from its surrounding county," he wrote. "The broader region includes 15 counties and seven separate Continuums of Care responsible for coordinating homelessness response.

"Homelessness does not stop at city limits. Housing markets do not respect municipal boundaries, and poverty does not end at county lines.

"Yet our systems are often organized in silos."

As conversations about South Grand continue, we remain grounded in something fundamental: A person's housing status does not define who they are.

People experiencing homelessness are our neighbors. They are individuals with different stories, circumstances, and needs. They deserve to be treated with dignity and compassion.

As PPCS CEO Anthony D'Agostino shared with St. Louis Magazine, challenges like violence should not be conflated with homelessness. Addressing the very real concerns of a community and treating people experiencing homelessness with humanity are not opposing ideas.

At Peter & Paul Community Services, we believe lasting solutions come from looking beyond someone's current circumstances and working together to create pathways toward safety, stability, and home.

We appreciate the St. Louis community for continuing this important conversation and creating space to talk about both the challenges our neighborhoods are facing and the humanity of our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

It takes resources, support, opportunity, and a community that believes everyone deserves a place to call home.

We’re grateful for our partnership with United Way of Greater St. Louis and the network of local nonprofits working together to strengthen our community. The United Way campaign helps support organizations like PPCS, so together we can help people access the resources and support they need on their path to stability.

Because when we come together, we can create a St. Louis where everyone has a place to call home.

What an inspiring day at the Peter & Paul Community Campus! 🩵

We were honored to welcome St. Louis native, bestselling author, and motivational speaker John O'Leary for a special Live Inspired speaking engagement.
