Badge mash up today! Chapter 33 worked on both our Water Safety and First Aid badges to prep for our summer water fun and our float trip later in the month. Kids learned important safety rules around water, types of PFDs, how to safely wear a life jacket (PFD), safe expedition rules, some info about first aid kits, and then we made our own first aid kits. We also had scouts practice their protocol for Minor Cuts and Scrapes on their adults. More practice might happen at home as well :) Lots of info covered, lots of great questions and discussion, and hopefully our scouts will feel safer and more empowered to help in the future.

Chapter 33 attended an amazing Intro to Fishing experience with Missouri Dept of Conservation today! It was a gorgeous day to learn how to fish and check out the incredible fish hatcheries in Forest Park (FYI not open to public fishing - you'll have to sign up for one of their programs to fish there). Scouts and families had alot of fun learning catch and release - lots of small fish were caught. No big ones - yet! We also saw plenty of turtles, birds (including an less commonly seen Solitary Sandpiper!), and insects. What a wonderful day to explore such a special spot. We're also including maps that were distributed of managed fishing spots in the metro area - happy and safe fishing everyone!

Chapter 33 had one of our 2026 First Sunday Lunch fundraisers this past weekend - with epic bake sale table! Scouts and parents provided a sweet treat feast for all. The best baked potatoes were served for lunch - including one behemoth that didn't finish cooking until lunch was just about over! Everyone pitched in greeting, decorating, cashiering, busing, serving and generally helping out. Thanks so much to Ethical Society of St. Louis for allowing us the space and opportunity to host and work together as a chapter to raise funds for our group!

Chapter 33 enjoyed our first camping trip of the year! We went to Washington State Park, survived a very rainy first night, then bundled up the next day to explore the park. We got a fantastic tour of the main petroglyph site (3/4 of the state's petroglyphs are found here), did a cool activity making our own petroglyph amulets, then went on a hike during the warmer afternoon hours. Some intrepid scouts even played in the creek for a while! We also learned that Missouri has a carnivorous flower - the Fire Pink - after we observed it on the trail then looked it up to ID it. Scouts also made a stop motion scary campfire story preview, played games, roasted hot dogs and marshmallows, and just generally played around! We also had an ambitious parent make a fire bow - we got smoke but no fire...yet! To be continued... All around great trip, thanks so much to the amazing rangers at Washington State Park and the Missouri Department of Conservation for giving us extra insight!

Chapter 33 worked on two badges at our last meeting - our Navigators Around the World/USA badge and our Storytelling badge. We all filled out postcards to mail out to other chapters in a postcard exchange - scouts did an amazing job telling a short fact about our group and city, then asking a question for the recipient of the card! We can't wait to see what comes our way in return! Then we had our second puppet workshop and told group stories and skits with our puppets that we made with the help of the Puppet Guild of Greater St Louis - plus a few extra puppets that wandered into the meeting ;) Scouts were so creative, collaborative and silly! What a great way to start off spring!

Chapter 33 started working on our Storytelling badge this past weekend - and used puppetry as a lens! A couple members of The Puppet Guild of Greater St Louis visited us and gave an amazing presentation - complete with puppet making activities. Scouts were able to make two kinds of puppets - noodle heads and finger puppets. We were able to repurpose quite a few scraps and materials in the process! We'll gather later in the month to tell stories together with our puppets. Scouts were extremely creative and proud of their playful, goofy, exciting creations!

Chapter 33 was able to participate in a Maple Syruping workshop with Missouri Department of Conservation today as part of our Heritage badge work. We learned all about how and when to tap a tree, how it's been done differently over generations and cultures, and then how to turn that sap into sugar and syrup! We got to sample pure maple tree sap, maple sugar, and maple syrup. Thanks so much to MDC and Rockwoods Reservation for putting on such a great program!

Chapter 33 worked on our Heritage badge recently - we talked about why learning about history is important, what was different/similar about our lives and those of people at least 150-200 years ago, and then worked on a couple projects to learn about a couple skills that would've been needed. The first project took a bit longer than expected so scouts took their second one home - a basket weaving craft. The first project was making jam and discussing food preservation. Scouts prepared a berry freezer jam using berries, sugar, pectin, and water. Everyone pitched in so that by the end we had plenty of jam to share with everyone!! Thanks to the Ethical Society of St. Louis for sharing kitchen space and supplies, and to all the parents and caregivers who helped support the endeavor. Hope everyone gets to enjoy their jam and share with others!!

Chapter 33 did more work on our Games badge today with an outing to the World Chess Hall of Fame and chess lessons with St Louis Chess Club. Scouts with some chess experience had a presentation from a Grandmaster and then played a collaborative chess game online - and won! Scouts just beginning got to get hands-on with sets and learn how pieces move and good opening strategy. Then on the tour of the World Chess Hall of Fame, scouts saw all kinds of different amazing chess sets, learned about some chess history, and get to play around with chess variants. There was something for everyone and we truly appreciated all the knowledge and enthusiasm of our guides and teachers!

Chapter 33 rang in 2026 with a Games badge meeting!! We brainstormed types of games, learned about some ancient games - several of the oldest around 5000 years old - and went over basic rules for any enjoyable game session. Then we just played! Scouts could observe and try out all kinds of games that families brought to share. We all thought it was a great way to share community and work out our minds and creativity!
