Random thoughts:

1. One benefit of ministering to people is not only seeing change in their life, but also watching in real-time, how the changes in their life affects and changes the lives of others!

2. One of my classes in the St. Louis City Justice Center (City Jail) is teaching men who are doing federal prison sentences, but for one reason or other are doing some of that time locally. It was amazing today watching the “lightbulb” come on for one young man. He realized that when he eventually gets out, his now very young daughter will be 8 years old. After today’s class, his questions shifted from how he could pray to be able to do the things that he wanted in life, to how could he pray for and teach the Word to his daughter, to give her every chance in life. A complete change in his life focus and priorities. He’s excited about partnering with God to give his daughter a better life!

3. Another gentleman’s “aha” moment I saw today in Bible Study class was when he realized that he had control over his own fear and anger.

4. I provide Bibles, Bible resource books for the ladies and gentlemen taking my classes in the Justice Center. If you sense a leading to help, please go to SpeakToTheCity.com and scroll down to “donate” and give. To purchase the items and send directly, inbox me, as we use a specific Bible and resources. Obey whatever the Lord tells you to give. There are lots of people joining the classes each week.

5. I was glad when they said unto me, “Let us go into the House of the Lord”!

6. I was not so glad at all when they said unto me, “Let us go into Red Lobster”, cause why did they start scrimping on the cheese inside the Cheddar Bay biscuits?! There was NO Cheese or seasoning actually inside any of the biscuits when I went last! Just lightly sprinkled on the top-VERY lightly! It was not good at all. Not like it was a favorite to begin with, but now even their most redeeming quality is no longer the same! Blechh!

7. I’m so excited about all the things that God is doing! I just can’t tell it all!

8. No. Literally. I can’t tell it. I’m not speaking on anything out of turn.

9. I’ve come to grips with the fact that I often will be led by God to do things differently than much of the Church. Not differently just for the sake of being different, and still always scripturally, just not always in line with the culture of American Church, which many believe is “God’s way”. Jesus was not American and neither is His Church. The Church does not conform to culture, even if it will sometimes operate within it. The culture does not create the Church. Truth be told, the Church is supposed to influence and create culture.

10. I’ve said it before, and it isn’t necessary to repeat it, but I’m gonna anyway: I am perfectly capable of laughing along when the joke is on me. But if I notice you laughing longer and louder than I am, I’m taking note. Laughing with me is fine. Laughing at me may just be revealing your heart towards me and what God has called me to.

11. Some of the coolest people I know are children. Even a certain discriminating gentleman under the age of 2, who, while not exceptionally verbal, is brutally honest.

12. You haven’t lived until you have had a toddler “tell” you non verbally just how he feels about the food you prepared for him. The emotional damage of having someone silently look you dead in the eye, without blinking or looking away, and holding their mouth open just wide enough and long enough for the scrambled egg you just deposited within it to tumble slowly out and run down the front of his bib and onto the table.🥹

13. Some people don’t realize that their lack of attraction for you is not an insult, but a greatly appreciated reprieve. 🙄

14. There are many things I can’t explain. But there are many that I can. It is in the best interest of some to at least consider what I have to say in certain instances. Often God wants to speak to people, but when they reject his messengers, they don’t realize they’re often also rejecting the message and the one who sent it. We don’t get to choose the method or the messenger.

15. I’m truly grateful for the people who pray for and with me. If someone is sensing a leading to do so on a more official basis, please inbox me.

16. I haven’t mentioned it much lately, but my hair is doing great things!

17. Fighting for the right to show up to class looking like a bum at a dignified, historically Black institution of higher education, while bypassing the opportunity to stand up for your actual rights in this country, is proof that “the culture” needs to take a look at who and what is driving it, to where and why!

18. Have a great, restful night and a wonderful day tomorrow!

(11/15) “Researchers from Washington University told us in 2014 that there was an 18-year difference in life expectancy between JeffVanderLou and Clayton. So if you’re born in the former, you’re going to live that much less than a child born in Clayton. Why is that? Because of what you have access to and what you don’t. Safe housing. Nutritious food. Health care. Transportation. Clean environments. Stable income. Green space. All of these things shape health long before someone steps into a hospital. Researchers called it an unequal distribution of resources.

And it’s not like our country doesn’t have enough food to feed us all. About 38% of food in the U.S. goes to waste. So if we really wanted to feed people, we could. The pandemic showed us that: Schools, nonprofits, governments, and neighbors all figured out how to get food to families. During that period, child poverty dropped to the lowest level ever recorded in U.S. history because support systems expanded. But many of those programs expired. Policies were rolled back. And food insecurity started rising again.

Today, in St. Louis, 1 in 3 kids doesn’t have enough food. And we can’t overlook what that actually means. You can give a child something to eat, and their stomach will quiet down. They’ll be OK today and tomorrow. But over time, the impact shows up in the classroom, in the body, and eventually in life expectancy itself.

Alright, I need to pause. Cause I could just keep going and going.”
