A new study led by St. Louis construction wellness advocate John Gaal finds skilled-trades workers need immediate support after a su***de loss.

Gaal is the chief research officer of the Construction's Acute Su***de Postvention Response project and chief learning officer for the St. Louis Building Trades Wellness Coalition. His new study on su***de postvention in the skilled trades was published in the latest edition of the International Journal of Vocational Education and Training's journal.

The series of surveys and interviews he conducted for the study reveal the need for the U.S. construction industry to provide care in the first 48 hours after a worker loses a colleague or loved one to su***de.

The emphasis on the trades was intentional — and not just because Gaal spent much of his career as a carpenter and labor representative. Among industries, construction has one of the highest su***de rates. But unlike other professional fields with disproportionately high rates of su***de, like dentistry and veterinary medicine, skilled trades employers offer little to no immediate support to workers, otherwise known as postvention care.

Americans want , plain and simple. Our jobs, our wages, and our working class economy would be stronger if everyone who wanted to work had the opportunity.

Imagine if one-in-three private-sector workers belonged to a union. What would wages, benefits, and working conditions look like if more workers had access to a union contract and the labor movement gained strength to beat back billionaires and big corporations? What would it mean for our economy an...
