Please see Discussions for instructions on posting your photos. Louis is a non-profit organization. We are NABA’s first (and, so far, only) Missouri chapter. There will be a Butterfly Count at Busch Conservation Area this Sunday, June 26, 2016. Everyone is welcome, whether you are a member of the North American Butterfly Association or not. All experience levels are welcome, too. Meet at the Jim Ziebol Butterfly Garden at the bottom of the Visitor's Center parking lot at 8:45. We will leave the parking lot at 9:00. There is a $3 fee to participate. One group will stay in Busch C.A., where we drive to various lakes and walk 10-15 minutes at each spot. Another group will go to Lost Valley Trail on Hwy. 94; at this location, we walk a mile and then retrace our steps back to the parking lot. No nets or collecting, please. Cameras and binoculars are welcome. Please bring lots of water. Hiking shoes or boots recommended. Ticks can be an issue so dress defensively with long pants tucked into socks. Some groups might have an informal picnic lunch in the Pavilion behind the Visitor's Center after finishing the Count. If anyone has any questions, you may contact Yvonne Homeyer at:

Researchers have found that human influence has accelerated the rate of species change in these prairies and likely in other natural places.

Our Spring Butterfly Count at Shaw Nature Reserve will take place on Sunday, May 31. We will assemble in the parking lot by the Visitor's Center at the entrance at 8:45 and leave the parking lot at 9:00. We will have gate keys for cars to drive up to the Trail House for groups that start at the Trail House. Another group will park at Bascom House and walk to the Trail House. We eat lunch at the Trail House and generally depart in cars back to the main parking lot about 1:00. If you need to leave sooner, you can walk back.

All NABA members and their guests are welcome on the Count. The Missouri Botanical Garden has graciously agreed to waive your entrance fee for non-Garden members. There is a nominal $3 count fee charged by NABA which we collect at the beginning of the Count.

All groups will have at least one member experienced with sight identification of butterflies so please don't feel that you need to be able to ID every butterfly yourself! The more eyes, the better, and Shaw Nature Reserve is one of the most beautiful natural areas.

Join us on our first butterfly walk this Sunday, April 12, at Young Conservation Area outside of Eureka, Missouri, on Hwy. FF. We'll meet at the parking lot at 10:45 and start our walk at 11:00. We walk slowly so it will be easy to catch up with us. We'll walk about 3 miles by the time we return to the parking lot. There are no picnic tables at Young but some of us will bring a picnic lunch anyway.

They are predicting sun for Friday and Saturday, so this will give the butterflies a chance to pop out after all the rain. We expect Spring Azures and Falcate Orangetips to be numerous, and we are also likely to see Goatweed Leafwing, Eastern Comma, Red Admiral, Mourning Cloak, Zebra Swallowtail and more! Bird migration is underway so we should see or hear Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-throated Warbler, and other migrants as well.
