Advocacy Builders Project explores four domains: Healthcare, Education, Economic Stability, and Neighborhood & Built Environment. These domains are organized into non-sequential, interconnected units intended to be navigated in order of the reader’s preference. The specific aspects of the social determinants this project explores only represent pieces of the larger systems. They were selected to serve as accessible entry points and foster nuanced conversation about intersectionality and the systems in which we interact. Another FREE resource available at westories.org! The Advocacy Builders Project aims to illuminate systems and demystify advocacy utilizing the framework of social determinants of health to explore systems and to demonstrate interdependence of racist, sexist, and classist systems.

By developing their ability to envision each of these systems (healthcare, education, economic stability, and neighborhood and built environment) individually AND as they intersect and reinforce each other, individuals can channel their energy, resources, and power into meaningful actions. Our themed lessons include curated diverse books, reflection and discussion questions, and accompanying activities that align with social justice standards for children. Research shows that kids clearly notice skin color and ethnic differences. See our Getting Started document for a summary. By talking about these visible and meaningful differences, you are giving your children the language they need to be competent and fluid in the world in which they live. They may have a different idea about what's appropriate to say in public than you do, but the best thing you can do is to model that race and skin color is an okay thing to notice and talk about. Our “Family Learning Program” content begins with individual and family learning and practices, and then encourages further engagement in equity efforts in the spaces where we live, work, and play. The monthly themes were chosen for their power in deconstructing biases, building anti-racist mindsets, and fostering anti-racist family habits.
