Dutchtown Main Streets can confirm that there are vacancies on this block involved in drug trafficking we have brought to the City of St. Louis’s attention through the Problem Properties Division that have not been timely acted on. This dates back months and we hope this latest unfortunate incident of gun violence results in immediate action instead of blaming a local business.

Somebody used to live or work in every empty building in Dutchtown!

It's hard to imagine, but for every vacant building and empty lot in Dutchtown, there was once someone living there. But just because something is hard to imagine or harder to achieve, doesn't mean we don't dream big and make the effort in Dutchtown! That's why Dutchtown Main Streets is bringing you the series Vacancy to Vibrancy in Dutchtown!

Currently, there are an estimated 300 vacant buildings in Dutchtown and more across the third ward. Starting today, every Wednesday for the next year, we are going to explain how we tackle them. Not just with a hashtag slogan (we've got that!), but with actual numbers, the actual tools, and the actual buildings on your block.

Let's start with one of the first challenges. How we count. When we count vacancies in this series, we mean buildings. Empty lots are a real problem and we will discuss them too, but we will focus on buildings.

The estimated number of building vacancies is from the St. Louis Vacancy Collaborative Vacant Property Explorer's most recent 2026 count of Dutchtown building scored as vacant using combined Building Division, Forestry, Citizens' Service Bureau, Assessor, and Land Reutilization Authority records.

Incredibly, that number is down over 33% from the 2022 annual average of 473. That's the year we started working with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri on our vacancy abatement strategy!

We want to tell you the story of how we got to where we are today and how we plan to get that number as close to zero as possible together. We hope this helps everyone imagine a Dutchtown where more people have safe and affordable housing and our community becomes more resilient and sustainable!

Follow along with us and a year from now you will know vacancy better than most people at City Hall. You'll be able to drive the neighborhood and know how a building went from a blight to a wealth-building opportunity for a local family. Most importantly, you'll be able to advocate and help us reach our goals!

A building that sat vacant for years in Dutchtown opened its doors today as affordable housing ready for two families.

For this vacancy, we got there through litigation and a filed lawsuit. Dutchtown Main Streets and Legal Services of Eastern Missouri brought a vacancy case on a long-neglected two-family building, and title moved to Tower Grove CDC. We filed that suit in 2023 and three years later the property is ready to be a home.

Tower Grove CDC secured an affordable Housing Program award with Midwest Bank Center sponsoring the application in partnership with the International Institute St. Louis to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. Rubicon did the construction.

Numerous partners and one goal: bringing affordable housing to the Dutchtown neighborhood for as many neighbors as possible and tackling the problems caused by vacancy.

While Dutchtown Main Streets and the litigation don't produce the housing, it's one tool that has helped us drive down vacancy in the neighborhood 25% since its peak in 2022.

This is and you'll be hearing more about it every Wednesday as we tell the story of how Dutchtown is beginning to change for the better and Dutchtown Main Streets and its partners are ensuring as many current neighbors as possible are benefiting from the changes.

By the youth and for the youth! Our young neighbors are rocking the block at Marquette Plaza this Saturday!

Come to Compton Avenue in Marquette Park for food, drinks, live DJs, dance competitions, games, water slides, go-karts, and more! Kids of all ages and their families are invited to join from 6pm to 8pm. Then from 8pm to 10pm, we're stepping aside to let the teens have their time!

This event was conceptualized, proposed, and organized by Dutchtown teens with support from Dutchtown Main Streets, Employment Connection Saint Louis, Dutchtown Opportunity Coalition for Youth, Thomas Dunn Learning Center, Gene Slay's Girls & Boys Club of Saint Louis, Encore STL, SHOW ME PEACE, and Mission: St. Louis.
