After a few hard years, he trained at Poro, the beauty school started by Annie Malone, one of the first Black women in America to become a millionaire. Doing hair paid better than building houses, and it carried him into the 1950s. Then came “Maybellene,” named after a box of mascara, and a duck walk he invented to hide a wrinkled suit.

October 18 would have been his 100th birthday. This month Gent Fashion Week celebrates him with Style + Sound Fashion Week, October 15 to 17, with Sumner High School students on the runway.

🍸 St. Louis didn’t just throw the first cocktail party. We gave a whole way of dressing its name, and eventually even Paris had to admit it was ours.

In the spring of 1917, Clara Bell Walsh opened her new home on Lindell, hired an expert mixer, and served fifty guests cocktails at high noon on a Sunday.

Two days later the Globe-Democrat called it the first cocktail party in society’s history and predicted it had “come to stay.”
Within weeks the story had traveled two thousand miles.

The flapper came and went, but Clara’s kind of party, standing around with a drink, needed its own dress. By 1928 the papers had a name for it:

the cocktail dress.

Decades later, a St. Louis department store was selling it a few miles from where the whole thing started.

This year, the Missouri Historical Society is throwing Clara’s kind of party again.

Shaken & Storied: History on the Rocks, Friday, October 16 at the Missouri History Museum. Dress code: cocktail, with a 1910s twist. Which means dressing for a garment that didn’t have its name yet in 1917. We love the irony.

The future of St. Louis fashion ✨

Last week at Fashion Futures, we awarded six outstanding students with the Susan Sherman Fashion Scholarship, providing not only financial support, but mentorship and industry connections to help launch the next generation of fashion talent.

After the awards, the room turned into what makes the St. Louis Fashion Fund so special: connection. Students met with seven fashion industry companies and dozens of local designers, brands, retailers, and professionals who showed up to invest in their future.

This is what we do. We bring students, industry, and opportunity together to build a stronger fashion community in St. Louis.

The 2026 Susan Sherman Fashion Scholarship closes soon and if you’re a Missouri college student studying fashion design, merchandising, entrepreneurship, or ANY track adjacent to the industry, this is the one you want to apply for.

Six $5,000 scholarships will be awarded by the Saint Louis Fashion Fund.

You have to be enrolled at an accredited Missouri college or university, have completed at least one full semester, and maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher.
