🎉The Green Dining Alliance is coming to Kansas City‼️

We've partnered with our friends at Bridging The Gap to expand the GDA program and bring sustainable dining to Kansas City restaurants! We are excited to have their team breaking ground and helping The City of Kansas City eat green. 🍴

We anticipate this project to significantly contribute to KC’s Regional Food Loss & Waste Reduction Action Plan. The KC Metro area generates 296,000 tons of food waste a year with 22% of the waste stream being food waste. The GDA-KC Project has the potential to significantly contribute to the KC Food Wise goal of cutting the region’s landfilled food waste in half by 2030. Our St. Louis program diverts over 13 million pounds of waste from the landfill each year with over 10% of that being from food waste.👩‍🔬

🙌This project was able to happen through grants, partnerships and funding-matches with ReFED, Wichita State Environmental Finance Center, the Gateway Regional Environment Fund, and the City of Kansas City.

An initiative of earthday365, the Green Dining Alliance (GDA) is helping local restaurants lower their environmental impact.

Webster Groves Sustainability Coordinator Shawn Finnegan and GDA Program Manager Gillian Garland highlight the program for Green Dining Week, April 6-12.

With nine restaurants certified, Webster Groves is the fifth Green Dining District in St. Louis, joining Maplewood, The Loop, South Grand, and The Grove.

GDA-certified establishments include: Bagel Union, Balkan Treat Box, Beignet All Day, Big Sky Cafe, Bijoux Handcrafted Chocolates, Madrina, Maypop & The Marshall House, Olive + Oak, and Telva at the Ridge.

Through a comprehensive on-site audit and tailored goal setting, the GDA is assisting restaurants with implementing sustainable practices across their operations.

The City of Webster Groves offers microgrants to food service establishments that become certified with the GDA.

We couldn't have done the St. Louis Earth Day Festival without our volunteers, and we couldn't feed our volunteers without these awesome local businesses!

Thank you to Local Harvest Grocery, Living Room, Hot Box Cookies (South Grand), Pizza World - Shrewsbury, MO, Fresh Thyme Market (City Foundry), Abby's, Dewey's Pizza (University City), Saint Louis Zoo, and Trader Joe’s (Brentwood) for helping fuel over 150 volunteers with your generous support. 💚

A lot happens behind the scenes to make it a successful weekend, and we truly appreciate all the help from our community.

Congratulations to Olive + Oak for winning our 2026 Food For Thought Award! 🌎🏆

Olive + Oak, located in Webster Groves, welcomes you with well-made drinks and ingredient-driven food made from scratch. They work tirelessly to provide the perfect place to enjoy time with friends and family.

Their accomplishments include:

🌾 Impressive sourcing of locally grown fruits and vegetables, and local procurement of everything from breads and cheeses to florals and wine.

♻️ They are a 3-time St. Louis Food Waste Challenge participant – decreasing food waste by thousands of pounds annually - showing a true commitment to reducing their footprint as a full-service restaurant.

⚡️ They excel in using technology to tackle energy and water usage including solar power; efficient fixtures and lighting; and even a mobile tool to control building systems remotely.

💚 Supporting many community fundraisers.

Olive + Oak have clearly demonstrated top level leadership in sustainability and in the green dining community. We are so proud to call them a Green Dining Alliance member!

We need your help to feed the amazing volunteers who make the St. Louis Earth Day Festival possible 💚

Each year, 150–200 volunteers per day help set up, manage, and break down this community tradition that highlights educational resources, local nonprofits, sustainable businesses, and Green Dining Alliance certified restaurants. We couldn’t do it without them.
We’re asking for food donations to keep our crews fueled as they work to make the Festival safe, welcoming, and waste-free for everyone. We know this is a challenging time for many in the restaurant industry, and we’re incredibly grateful for any support the community can offer.

🥪 Donate at https://secure.qgiv.com/for/earthday365
1. Go to our donation page and select an amount
2. In the next screen, click the checkmark to make a “dedication” - make sure to dedicate this as “volunteer food” so we know what it is for.
