by JaKenzie Brown ’16 (MICDS ’22)

One day in 2008, I heard my mom scream. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “Obama is the President of the United States!” she exulted. “He will be the first black president.” Before then, for 119 years, there wasn’t a single black president.

Four years ago, I was eight years old. When I came to City Academy, I was shy, anxious and only talked to a few people. Over the years, that part of me diminished. I’ve spoken to many visitors and dug up the courage to sing and rap in our original song, “Color of Love.” My handwriting has even improved.

This I believe: change is good. Change is what gives us courage and inspires us to better ourselves. Change is what makes the difference between today and yesterday; and the difference between today and tomorrow. The evolution of mankind is hinged on change and is the reason why we aren’t the way we were five years ago. It’s also why we’ll be different five years in the future.

Change is good because it improves us. It lets us expand our knowledge and enhance our technology. It’s change that happens when we invent artificial limbs, robotic surgery, and different types of medicine.

I know change is good so I’ve started to change myself. I stopped hoarding old notebooks, binders, and Happy Meal toys. I have a better work ethic. I use to complete my homework just to get it out of the way. Now I put my best foot forward by proofreading and adding more detail. I have come to believe in myself more than I ever did before.

My classmates and I have changed immensely over the years. That’s what this graduation is about: us changing from immature children to young adults. This I believe: change is necessary.

Once upon a time there was discipline in schools and at home. Children were expected to respect their teachers, parents and their elders. "like" & "share" if you think this pic reflects kids/schools/parents today....savannah

THANK YOU FOR MAKING GIRL SCOUTING POSSIBLE
Without a paycheck and without any fanfare, you've devoted yourself to girl leadership. You put in long hours, stay patient as girls lead their own activities, and bring fun and spirit to everything girls do.
It all pays off. Because girl leadership isn't only about being class president or volleyball captain. Not every girl will grow up to run a company, be a politician, or manage a science lab, if that's not her passion. But every girl can be a leader in her own life, so that she—and everyone around her—blossoms into their full potential. A girl leader not only avoids going along with friends who want to skip class or shoplift, but also convinces them not to do it themselves. She supports the aspirations of other girls—no matter how lofty—even if she doesn't share those aspirations. And she steps in when she sees others making fun of a fellow student who doesn't find herself among the popular crowd.
That's leadership, Girl Scout style. That's making the world better. And that's the difference you make in the world, one girl at a time.
Thank you.

PARENTS
HAVE YOU THANKED A VOLUNTEER TODAY?
Girl Scouting wouldn't be possible without our nearly one million volunteers. During Volunteer Appreciation Week, please take time to thank the Girl Scout volunteer(s) who made a difference in your life, or in the lives of your daughter, sister, granddaughter, or niece.
Not sure how to share your appreciation? Volunteers tell us that the most meaningful thank-you gift is a handwritten note about the impact they've had on girls' lives. Of course, volunteers won't say no to flowers, gift certificates, and collectibles! But, really, just writing or saying "thank you" will make a world of difference to your dedicated Girl Scout volunteer.
