In 1953, Cochran Gardens opened as St. Louis’ first major postwar public housing development, welcoming families and marking a new chapter in the city’s housing history.

Our SLHA team brought the team spirit to our latest all-staff meeting! Staff came together for a day of updates, collaboration, and conversation as we reflected on our progress and looked ahead to what’s next.

Cochran Gardens takes shape. 🏗️

This week’s Throwback Thursday takes us to 1952, with an aerial view of Cochran Gardens during construction. The photograph captures a moment when new homes and a new chapter of public housing were taking shape in St. Louis.

Looking back at these images helps us trace the history of housing in our city and the communities that became part of its story.

James House showed up for National Night Out! 💙🎉
Residents, community partners, and first responders came together for an evening of food, fun, resources, and connection. From basketball and bounce house activities to line dancing with India Fowler and treats from the Polar Cops Ice Cream Truck, there was something for everyone!

Thank you to our participating vendors: Employment Connection Saint Louis, Circle of Friends, SLHA City-Wide TAB, Crisis Nursery, Healthy Hair 2 Day, Behind It All Foundation, Ready Readers, Fathers & Families Support Center, St. Louis, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, St. Louis Public Library , Centerstone (formerly Places for People), St. Louis City Department of Health, St. Louis City Office of Financial Empowerment, and Affinia Healthcare.

We also appreciate Steve's Hot Dogs, Shoot Ya Shot Basketball, Mobile YMCA, Tomcat Bounce House, Peacemaker Defense Group, and India Fowler for helping bring the evening to life.

A big shout out to the Circuit Attorney’s Office, St. Louis City Fire Department, and St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, including Captain J.D. McCloskey and the Polar Cops Ice Cream Truck!
