Arthritis medications are important to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and prevent further joint damage. But if they aren’t stored properly, they may not work as promised. Exposure to light, humidity, and extreme temperatures can break down both prescription and over-the-counter drugs, making them less effective and – in rare cases – even toxic. Here are some tips on how to store your medications safely while also making sure they’re readily available.

- Avoid bathroom cabinets - Bathrooms aren’t a great place to store medications because of high heat and humidity. A better choice is a kitchen counter or cabinet away from children's reach, sunlight and heat sources. Another option is a drawer in a bedroom dresser, provided it's used every day so pills aren't forgotten.

- Keep medications out of the car - One of the biggest mistakes people make is leaving medications in a parked car, which can become scorching or frigid in a matter of minutes. If you have a prescription to pick up, make sure the drugstore is the last stop of the day.

- Carry them with you - When traveling, always put medications in your carry-on luggage. Baggage can get lost, and cargo holds on airplanes aren't temperature controlled; meaning checked bags can sizzle or freeze on the tarmac. Many manufacturers provide no-cost travel packs for refrigerated medicines.

Medication isn't the only way to manage arthritis joint pain and stiffness from arthritis. There are natural therapies that can play an important role in how you feel. Here are some ways you can ease pain naturally:

- Massage - Gentle manipulation with moderate pressure has been shown to reduce joint pain and stiffness, and even improve range of motion. However, timing is important. Listen to your body. Massage may not be as helpful during a very active flare when joints are especially tender and sensitive.

- Yoga - The use of deep breathing, meditation and body poses has been shown to decrease joint pain and stiffness, as well as improve relaxation and reduce stress. The Arthritis Foundation offers a Yoga DVD specifically created for people with arthritis.

- Weight Loss - Losing one pound removes four pounds of pressure on swollen, painful joints. Maintain a healthy weight by combining a balanced diet with regular physical activity. Make sure you choose food from the five important food groups (fruits, vegetable, lean protein, low-fat dairy and whole grains). Try to do 30 minutes of low-impact exercise five days a week.

Although no diet can cure for arthritis, certain foods have been shown to strengthen bones, maintain the immune system and fight inflammation. Adding these foods to your balanced diet may help ease pain and other arthritis symptoms.

🐟 Fish - Because certain types of fish are packed with inflammation-fighting omega-3 fatty acids, experts recommend at least 3 to 4 ounces of fish twice a week. Omega-3-rich fish include salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring.

🥛 Dairy - Low-fat dairy products, like milk, yogurt and cheese are packed with calcium and vitamin D, both of which increase bone strength. Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and helps support the immune system.

🍊 Citrus fruits – Oranges, grapefruits and limes are rich in vitamin C. Research shows that getting the right amount of vitamin C aids in preventing inflammatory arthritis and maintaining healthy joints with osteoarthritis.

🍽 Break Out the Beans
Beans are packed with fiber, a nutrient that helps lower CRP. Beans are also an excellent (and inexpensive) source of protein, which is important for muscle health. Some beans are rich in folic acid, magnesium, iron, zinc and potassium, all known for their heart and immune system benefits. Look for red beans, kidney beans and pinto beans.

🥜 Nuts - They're rich in protein, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin E and immune-boosting alpha linolenic acid (ALA) as well as filling protein and fiber. They are heart-healthy and beneficial for weight loss. Try walnuts, pine nuts, pistachios and almonds.
