September is CVI awareness month. Cortical visual impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of visual impairment in children. Early screening is vital since CVI is easily missed, which can cause significant early learning impact. VisionServe Alliance member East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind Inc shares this CVI information and screening tool being used across East Texas.

September is CVI Awareness Month, and we’re shining a light on an important effort that could help more children with vision loss get the support they need earlier.
This summer, the East Texas Lighthouse and Region 7 ESC helped bring specialized NAVEG training to East Texas, equipping 27 professionals and putting 24 infant vision screening kits into communities across our region. These tools can help identify infants who may need further evaluation for Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), a condition that can be difficult to detect through a traditional eye exam.
What makes this story even more powerful is the collaboration behind it. From an idea discovered through the Texas Association for Education & Rehabilitation of the Blind & Visually Impaired, to expertise and training from the Anchor Center for Blind Children and Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, to bringing those resources right here to East Texas through Region 7 and the Lighthouse, it’s a great example of what can happen when organizations work together.
