CASA of St. Louis

CASA of St. Louis We support Court Appointed Special Advocates - CASA volunteers - who advocate for children in foster care in St. Louis. Louis city and county foster care.

Our effective, compassionate advocacy helps reunify families and reduce the number of children in foster care. Every day, judges, child welfare professionals and caregivers make decisions that affect children who, through no fault of their own, were removed from the care of their parents and brought into state custody. Children enter care after having endured trauma at the hands of those responsib

le for their protection. If children’s needs are not met while in foster care, they will be at a higher risk of a future plagued by challenges, including low graduation rates, teen pregnancy, incarceration, homelessness and unemployment. These children, who have the most to gain or lose, have the least power in the decisions made by the court and the professionals who are responsible for their well-being. Voices child advocates are the only people whose sole focus is the best interests of the child. Our advocates give our children a powerful voice in decisions about where they will live and go to school, whether and how often they can spend time with siblings and other relatives, how long they will be in state custody and where they go when they leave foster care. We serve children from birth to age 21 in St. More than 80% of the children assigned to Voices are African American and nearly all come from families struggling with poverty. The children we serve have experienced multiple traumas including physical and sexual abuse and extreme medical, physical and/or educational neglect. As many as 40% have chronic health problems like asthma and diabetes, approximately 50% have a diagnosed psychiatric disorder and 60% have developmental delays or disabilities.

Reunification is often a long journey filled with challenges, growth, and determination. This month, we celebrate the families who have reunited, the professionals who support them, and the belief that children benefit when safe, stable family connections can be preserved and restored.

This week, we’re spotlighting CASA Ann Frey for a simple act of kindness that brightened our entire office.

In addition to her work as a CASA volunteer, Ann volunteers with Joy Petalers, an organization that repurposes donated flowers into bouquets that spread joy throughout the community. This week, she surprised our team with a basket of individual short-stemmed flower bouquets, bringing a little extra color and happiness to our day.

Ann spends her time making a difference in the lives of children as a CASA and sharing kindness through her work with Joy Petalers. We're grateful for volunteers like Ann who find so many ways to care for others. 💙🌷

At our most recent Board of Directors meeting, we had the opportunity to recognize and thank Bob and Stephanie as they prepare to conclude their board service on July 1.

Their leadership, dedication, and commitment to CASA of St. Louis have helped strengthen our organization and support our mission of advocating for children in foster care.

As CEO Jennifer Howard shared, "Bob and Stephanie have generously given their time, talents, and hearts to CASA. Their leadership has helped move our mission forward, and their impact will continue to be felt long after their board service ends. We are deeply grateful for all they have done for this organization and the children we serve."

Please join us in thanking Bob and Stephanie for their service and wishing them all the best in their next chapter. 💙

Tomorrow is National Children's Day, a day for us to recognize the importance of giving all children the chance to just be kids!

For children in foster care, normalcy means having the chance to experience everyday things like sleepovers, sports, birthday parties, and so much more. These experiences help them grow, connect, and feel a sense of belonging.

Go to stlcasa.org to learn how you can support children in St. Louis.

This week, we’re celebrating CASA Shameeka and a milestone that reflects her deep commitment to caring for others.

Since joining CASA in April 2024, Shameeka has already advocated for nine children across three cases, including supporting the reunification of a sibling group of four. She currently advocates for one youth individually as well as another sibling group of four, building strong trust with both foster families and youth who know she listens, cares, and follows through.

Alongside her CASA work and a full-time job, Shameeka recently earned her CNA license, continuing her dedication to serving and supporting others in meaningful, hands-on ways.

We’re proud to celebrate both her achievement and the steady impact she makes for the children she serves every day.

June is Family Reunification Month, a time to recognize the accomplishments of parents, children, caregivers, and professionals working toward safe and lasting family reunification.

The Children's Bureau states, "Relational permanency is fundamental to the well-being of children and youth in foster care." Whenever it is safe and possible, preserving family connections and supporting reunification remains a primary goal of the child welfare system.

Nationally, 46% of youth in foster care were reunified with their families in FY25. This month, we celebrate the hard work, resilience, and support that help make reunification possible for so many families.
