🚁 FROM ROTOR BLADES TO ROCKETS, FLIGHT IS A TEAM EFFORT! 🚀

October 4–10 is World Space Week, and the 2026 theme is “Rocket Revolution.”

A rocket and an Army helicopter may travel in very different ways—but neither leaves the ground through the work of one person alone.

Behind every successful flight are:

🔧 Engineers and skilled maintainers
📋 Careful inspections and checklists
🧭 Navigation, instruments and communication
🧪 Science, mathematics and problem-solving
🤝 People trained to work together as a team

At the Gateway Chapter, preserving historic Army helicopters gives visitors an opportunity to see historic aviation technology up close, meet the members who keep it operating and discover the science behind every flight.

Today’s curious young visitor could become tomorrow’s pilot, mechanic, engineer, technician—or help design the next generation of aircraft and spacecraft.

Different machines. Different missions. The same curiosity that makes people look toward the sky and ask:

“How does it fly?”

🇺🇸 REMEMBERING OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM — 25 YEARS LATER

On October 7, 2001, Operation Enduring Freedom began in response to the terrorist attacks of September 11.

Over the years that followed, American service members and coalition partners served across Afghanistan and in related operations around the world—often through long deployments, difficult conditions and extended separation from those they loved.

Army Aviation supported those missions through air assault, reconnaissance, medical evacuation, transportation, resupply and other critical operations. Behind every aircraft were pilots, crew chiefs, maintainers, flight medics and support personnel working together in demanding environments.

Today, the Gateway Chapter of the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation honors everyone who served during Operation Enduring Freedom.

We remember those who gave their lives, those who were wounded and those who returned home carrying burdens that were not always visible. We also recognize the families who served through their own sacrifices, uncertainty and separation.

To every Operation Enduring Freedom veteran: thank you for your courage and service.

You are not forgotten.

REMEMBERING THE BATTLE OF MOGADISHU
October 3–4, 1993

Thirty-three years ago, American service members entered Mogadishu, Somalia, on what was expected to be a short mission. Instead, they found themselves engaged in a fierce battle that continued through the night and into the following day.

Amid overwhelming danger and without hesitation, they fought to protect one another, reach their fallen comrades, rescue the wounded, and bring their fellow service members home.

Their courage was extraordinary. Their sacrifice was profound.

Today, the Gateway Chapter of the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation remembers those who gave their lives, those who were wounded or captured, and those who returned home carrying memories and scars that would remain long after the battle ended.

We also remember the families whose lives were forever changed.

Their courage, loyalty, and devotion to one another will never be forgotten.
