Schools often point to passing grades as proof that everything is fine.

But children can earn passing grades while remaining years behind in reading.

Passing grades measure compliance with classroom expectations.

Reading determines whether a child can access the curriculum, pursue higher education, and participate fully in society.

Those are not the same thing.

We talk about literacy rates like they are abstract numbers on a report. Percentages. Trends. Data points.

But every percentage point is a child. And behind every “acceptable” number is a decision, spoken or not, about how many children a system is willing to leave behind.

That calculation might work for institutions.

It does not work for parents.
