Historically, Quakers have been known for “not taking sides,” which we recognize does not reflect our understanding or practice today. The expression was used to reflect Quakers’ faith in the blessing of life. Every person, every life, is a manifestation of Spirit. Known for reaching out to everyone and bridging divides, Quakers invest in relationships and dialogue and resist the destructive business of enemy-making, pitting some people against others.- Nadine Hoover

The Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) Workshop first began in Green Haven prison in New York in 1975. Soon after, the second workshop was held in Auburn prison in New York, where workshop exercises and activities were refined, giving rise to the AVP workshop format that we know today. The workshops have spread beyond the prison walls into schools and communities. In Friends Peace Teams, the AVP for Justice and Peace (AVP-JP) is a Special Topic workshop series for justice and peace workers, including the AVP Basic workshop on Transforming Power, Trauma Resiliency, Liberation from Oppression, and Discerning a Consensus of Conscience. On October 24-26, 2025, an AVP Trauma Resiliency workshop was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. What follows is a reflection written by a participant in the workshop.

Having worked in war zones for decades, I have witnessed and heard of severe human rights violations. It’s tragic what human beings can do to one another — humiliation, intimidation, enslavement, forced sterilization, and all kinds of sexual, emotional, medical, and physical violence. Nadine Hoover

The Quaker legacy of justice and peace work in the world is marked by silent assistance from the nameless to the nameless; living from faith in the ways Spirit guides and shapes us; letting love and truth change us and take us places we never imagined; calling on Spirit in every person to act in accord with love and conscience in our relationships with all of creation. We make no enemies, take no sides. We make friends, and trust the universal Spirit of Life we share.
