The blessed Bishop Sheen was an AOH member and AOH's national chaplain from 1937-1941.

For those who did not see the news yesterday, here is a measured analysis of the potential new stance of the US government.

If this is not a slip of the tongue, and the new position of the US government, it is surprisingly welcome news for those who support freedom for all of Ireland.

The British Prime Minister's declaration that a border poll was off the table earlier, clearly went against the very nature of the Good Friday Agreement.

This is a decision the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland should initiate when there is evidence the political conditions have been met/it is time. Not to be scuttled from Westminster, because of a recent Scottish/Welsh vote or the political fickleness of the current prime minister.

The past few years have shown demographic and polling evidence that a border poll is needed.

For the UK prime minister to unilaterally force the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to bury his head in the proverbial sand, with such a declaration and claim he personally as the UK prime minister does not "see" evidence the vote would pass is not living up to the signed agreement. If this were the case the prime minister should have presented the metrics he utilized publicly along with his declaration. He did not in the end.

To have the head of the US government/the guarantor of the agreement support a border poll in response and call it "one of naturals of all time" further demonstrates a united free Ireland cannot be deterred. Alas we will see if words are met with action.

The 1998 Good Friday Agreement was clear: if the people show a likely majority for a united Ireland, the British government has a duty to hold the poll. Not a maybe. A duty.

This week, new UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham stood in Belfast and declared the border poll "off the table" — and his reasoning? Brexit and Scottish independence caused "rifts that take a long time to heal," so referenda are apparently too divisive to hold.

If the new unspoken criteria is "wait until Britain isn't divided," we will wait forever. Britain is always divided about something. That's not a threshold — it's a permanent veto dressed up as caution.
