The Missouri History Museum is opening a new exhibit called Soccer City, opening April 8, 2023. It chronicles soccer's popularity in St. Louis as far back as 1875. People from The Hill, as well as other parts of the city, will be thrilled to see their loved ones featured in this rich history!

The cover of the Missouri Historical Society's Spring 2023 magazine features The Hill's own Paul Pisani and players from the Carondelet Sunday Morning Athletic Club.

Go to the Museum and get your soccer history fix!

"Life is a game, bocce is serious!" Viola Rumbolo is on a mission!

On Thursday, June 10, residents of Friendship Village Chesterfield lead by the dynamic Viola Rumbolo played bocce at the Italo-America Bocce Club! Some may remember Rumbolo's Market on Shaw.

Thanks to Barb Guidici for assisting Viola in organizing the event and Annmarie Lumetta for being hostess and gentle but firm keeper of the rules!!

The seniors had a great time. At Friendship Village they graduated from playing in the hallways to the ballroom with chairs as the boundaries! Finally they have their own outdoor court. It's still a treat for them to go to the Bocce Club and play on real courts. They continually remark how fast the lanes are. Yep! But don't be fooled, they adjusted pretty quickly.

They had a lovely. Thanks Bocce Club for hosting them.

The Center recently received quite a few pastel portraits created by painter and sculptor Dominic Marfisi. He was a force in the community, always giving of his time and talent. He was married to the author and chronicler of Hill history, recipes, and all things Italian, Eleanor Berra Marfisi.

The pastels were donated from his niece through her friend. Neither had space for them yet couldn't bear to toss these fine pieces of artistry. I am posting them here in the hopes of someone recognizing the subject as none of the works are identified.

If you know anyone in these portraits, or find one so compelling that you'd like to have it, please contact me at [email protected].

World War II war brides
A graduate student from Mizzou visited The Center today looking for a history of marriages between American WWII servicemen and European, specifically Italian, women.

After looking through the Crusader Clarion, he found only one such couple married at St. Ambrose. If anyone knows of an American GI bringing home an Italian bride he met during the War, please contact us at The Hill Neighborhood Center.

The Greatest Generation
The Hill's own John Pozzo, 97 yrs old, served in the Pacific Theater in World War II. He was stationed on a refueling ship. He made it home to his sweetheart Clara with whom he created a loving, healthy family.

In November 2019, he was honored in a Channel 4 News Special Report highlighting surviving veterans in the St. Louis area.

Mr. Pozzo stops by The Hill Neighborhood Center occasionally. We are awed by his vitality, memory, and remarkable craftsmanship. He gets around like a person 20 years his junior and tells gripping stories of his war experience (like travelling to California from Asia over the Pacific in a cargo ship...seasick anyone?) Or his childhood days playing on The Hill and building a clubhouse in Macklind Field (aka Berra Park).

He gave The Neighborhood Center a long term lease on his newest creation, a scale model of the ship on which he served, the A0 42 Monongahela. It is a remarkably detailed model. He used found objects such as straight pins for the rail posts to hold the rope fencing around the ship's decking. The level of detail and intricacy is formidable.

Stop by to see it and the many other things we have to offer.
