The Greatest Generation
The Hill's own John Pozzo, 97 yrs old, served in the Pacific Theater in World War II. He was stationed on a refueling ship. He made it home to his sweetheart Clara with whom he created a loving, healthy family.
In November 2019, he was honored in a Channel 4 News Special Report highlighting surviving veterans in the St. Louis area.
Mr. Pozzo stops by The Hill Neighborhood Center occasionally. We are awed by his vitality, memory, and remarkable craftsmanship. He gets around like a person 20 years his junior and tells gripping stories of his war experience (like travelling to California from Asia over the Pacific in a cargo ship...seasick anyone?) Or his childhood days playing on The Hill and building a clubhouse in Macklind Field (aka Berra Park).
He gave The Neighborhood Center a long term lease on his newest creation, a scale model of the ship on which he served, the A0 42 Monongahela. It is a remarkably detailed model. He used found objects such as straight pins for the rail posts to hold the rope fencing around the ship's decking. The level of detail and intricacy is formidable.
Stop by to see it and the many other things we have to offer.
