Ten years ago today, following the death of Michael Brown Jr., Ferguson, Missouri received national and global attention as protests and unrest occurred.

On W. Florissant Ave a QuikTrip was burned down during the distress, but what arose in its place in 2017, is the Ferguson Community Empowerment Center (FCEC), a facility and partnership between The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis (ULSTL) and The Salvation Army.

Upstairs at The Salvation Army Ferguson Community Empowerment Center, Dr. Courtney Graves leads as Director of The Salvation Army’s work in that community, which has provided social services to over 14,000 individuals since opening. FCEC also offers programs including Spark Academy for third, fourth, and fifth grade students, helping children discover their talents and gifts, while building a solid foundation for their growth.

“Having worked with children and in the mental health space for over 15 years, this is a bit of a ‘perfect storm’ and being able to weather that storm will take a village. I am confident that The Salvation Army and the FCEC are a critical part of the village that Ferguson needs today and into the future,” said Dr. Graves.

We had a BLAST on Saturday at our Future Pathways Back-to-School Fair! We handed out 100 backpacks with school supplies, along with hotdogs, hamburgers, snacks, and cold water to attendees.

Youth enjoyed making art projects, jumping rope, playing video games, getting their faces painted, and leaping around in a bounce house.

Spark Academy’s own Brijah Rucker, did AWESOME one-on-one speaking sessions with adults, asking questions to learn more about their jobs and careers.

Thank you to the Ferguson Fire Department for grilling the hotdogs and hamburgers, and to the League of Women Voters of Metro St. Louis for helping register adult attendees to vote!

Join us on Saturday, June 1, for our 2024 Pathway to Health Fair!

This event features educational booths, giveaways, food, and FREE health care services and screenings including mammograms (breast cancer screening), STD testing, prostate cancer screening, substance abuse support, blood pressure, and cholesterol tests, along with immunizations.

The Pathway to Health Fair runs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., on Saturday, June 1st, see you there!
