It’s literally textbook narcissistic gaslighting. Donald Trump just told millions of struggling Americans that their money problems don’t exist.
On Fox News this week, the billionaire president brushed off voter concerns about the economy — calling polls that show widespread financial anxiety “fake.” He claimed we’re living in “the greatest economy we’ve ever had.”
Trump’s message is simple: if you can’t afford groceries, rent, or medical bills — you’re wrong. If you’re working two jobs and still falling behind — you’re mistaken. In his world, your suffering is an illusion, and the only truth that matters is the one that flatters him.
This is how narcissists operate. They rewrite reality to protect their ego. They dismiss pain because it doesn’t serve their narrative. And they demand loyalty, even as they deny what everyone can plainly see.
But reality doesn’t care about Trump’s delusions of greatness. Prices are still rising faster than wages. The average family is spending hundreds more a month on basics like food, gas, and rent. Seventy-two percent of Americans say the economy feels “poor.”
Trump’s response? “Fake polls.”
When he says you’re lying about the economy, what he really means is he can’t handle a world where he’s not adored. When he says “everything’s great,” what he means is “don’t question me.”
This is more than arrogance; it’s moral rot. Because leadership requires empathy — the ability to see people’s pain and want to ease it. Trump’s version of leadership is to deny that pain even exists.
And make no mistake: gaslighting isn’t just manipulation. It’s control. It tells struggling people that their lived experience is wrong — that the problem isn’t the system, it’s them.
So when Trump calls your money worries “fake,” remember this: it’s not your reality that’s broken. It’s his.
Because in a healthy democracy, truth matters more than ego. And when a narcissist tries to rewrite reality, the most powerful thing we can do is refuse to play along.
You’re not crazy. You’re not alone. You’re being lied to — again.
