As Black Maternal Health Week comes to a close, we want to uplift stories of several well-known Black women who have shared their experiences with serious complications surrounding pregnancy and birth. Racial inequities in maternal health care affect everyone, even women with fame and extensive resources, and these stories remind us that these disparities in care are both pervasive and fundamentally unjust.

Artist Tracy McCabe is showcasing her “Living and Dying Under Dobbs” art series which uses textile books and mixed media to share stories of death and suffering caused by abortion bans. Tracy’s art is a powerful reminder of all the suffering that has been caused since the Dobbs decision 4 years ago. We are thrilled that so many of our incredible storytellers are featured in her art, with some even joining for the opening gallery reception. Happy Match Day 2026 to all 4th year Med Students who are celebrating today! As students find out where they will be continuing their training and residencies, we are reminded yet again that abortion bans limit freedom for both patients and providers.

Medical students deserve the ability to match into the best program for them, regardless of the politics of that state. Communities in banned states will suffer as fewer providers choose to practice in states where they cannot receive full training or practice the full spectrum of care in their specialty.

Our friends offer a community and support if you are a medical student who cares about stopping abortion bans and continuing to provide the full spectrum of care available.

Last week, on National Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, Free & Just hosted a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary short, “The Devil Is Busy,” with our friends and stars of the film, . After the screening, clinic staff featured in the film moderated a short panel discussion with Georgia storytellers including local providers and family members of both Candi Miller and Amber Nicole Thurman, two women who died as a result of Georgia’s abortion ban.
