At VCP, we aim to serve every Veteran regardless of their discharge status, time in service, or branch. Those words take on a much deeper meaning when you look at the journey of John and Theresa. They are a local couple who joined us at VCP of St. Louis right at the very beginning, driven by a heartbreak that no parent should ever have to carry. Their National Guardsman son, Johnny, was a Veteran who needed the kind of care and support that he unfortunately could not access due to benefit eligibility. In memory and honor of their son, John and Theresa decided to build a legacy that would ensure no other Veteran fell through those same cracks.
Since the very start of our St. Louis Village, they have been a vital part of our mission. Theresa has been a staple in our outreach efforts every single Tuesday, and John has been out there in the dirt and the sawdust, working construction to physically build the Village from the ground up. They are the kind of people who do not just talk about the vision; they live it. Their entire community rallied behind the cause, throwing two massive fundraisers and raising over $100,000 to support VCP, with $50,000 of that specifically dedicated to sponsoring a home in Johnny’s honor.
That home is now complete, and today was a milestone that felt like a long-awaited exhale. A Veteran who was street homeless became the first resident of Johnny’s House. This morning, John, Theresa, and their community were on-site, personally staging and preparing the home to make sure it felt like a sanctuary. When we asked Theresa what it meant to finally welcome a Veteran into this space, she told us they felt "ecstatic". She mentioned that they are simply part of a team that makes up the "heart" of this project, alongside all the core volunteers, the VCP staff, and the dear family and friends who have been on this journey with them.
While her son needed the help VCP offers, she said it makes her so proud to know another Veteran is actually standing there receiving it. She sees Johnny in every Veteran we serve, because at the end of the day, he was one of them.
This move-in is more than just providing a roof. It is the start of a brand-new journey for a Veteran who has been through so much, and he is walking into a home filled with the love of a community who has his back. Theresa’s message for him is simple: "always remember to keep moving forward, and know that VCP is standing right behind you"
We are honored to walk this path with our new resident, and we are forever grateful to John and Theresa for turning their love for Johnny into a foundation for a Veterans future.
