Maternal Dignity Project Every woman deserves to give birth safely and to heal fully if she doesn't. WFF also launched its specialized Urogynecology Fellowship training program.

Maternal Dignity Project is a nonprofit organization that works to end obstetric fistula and related childbirth injuries in Africa. Women receive Life-Changing Surgery at WFF's Danja Fistula Center in Niger and at Referral Hospitals in Uganda. WFF works to identify women who need fistula treatment and transports them to surgery performed by Expert Fistula Surgeons. WFF offers Recovery and Support including safe places to heal, post-operative care, meals, counseling, individual care plans and physical therapy. Women are encouraged to participate in Education and Vocational Skills Training in literacy and health classes, as well as embroidery, catering and more. WFF also launched the Women’s Empowerment Center in Uganda in collaboration with TERREWODE. WFF supports Advocacy Groups by providing ongoing individual and group counseling, as well as connecting survivors to local survivor mentoring groups. WFF works to provide Expert OB-GYN Training through enhanced OB-GYN residency training, launched in partnership with and at Mekelle University in Ethiopia. Capacity building through WFF also includes Community Health Advocate Training where community members are trained in fistula awareness and to encourage local families to give birth in health centers.

Aname lived with obstetric fistula for nearly forty years. She rarely left her family's compound.
Then her brother sat through a community training about fistula, came home, and told her he thought he knew what was wrong. She was treated not long after. Nothing about her case was medically complicated. She had simply never met anyone who recognized it.

By the time our Executive Director Bonnie Ruder met her, Aname was making soap alongside other survivors, earning her own income, and teaching her community about fistula so other women wouldn't wait as long as she did.

Women like Aname are why Worldwide Fistula Fund and Terrewode Women's Fund are now one organization: Maternal Dignity Project. We fund African-led organizations that heal women, support them as they rebuild their lives, and prevent fistula in the first place. Together, we can do more of it.

If you've supported Worldwide Fistula Fund or Terrewode Women's Fund, this organization is yours too.

We are now Maternal Dignity Project. We chose the name because dignity has a concrete meaning in this work. It means a woman is told what happened to her body. It means no one operates on her without explaining what they're doing. It means the care she receives depends on nothing but her need for it.

It also means something harder to measure. Many women living with fistula carry deep shame. The organizations we fund walk with them through counseling, connection with other survivors, and steady support as they return to their families and communities.

Thank you for being part of this. We're just getting started.

Through access to safe maternal healthcare, skilled surgical repair, reintegration support, education, and advocacy, progress is being made because of the dedication of people around the world who refuse to let women suffer in silence.

Board members Tracy Spitznagle and Christina Lee joined Ugandan partner Joshua Olinga in Ethiopia to lead a trauma-informed PT training for the Mekelle Medical School Urogynecology Fellowship program. A full-circle moment, Joshua trained with them for four years and is now a confident educator himself. His journey reflects WFF’s commitment to sustainable, locally-led care.
