Did you know the brain keeps developing until around age 26? 🧠🧐

According to Peter Lane, DO, Medical Director of the UAB Addiction Recovery Program (ARP), the frontal cortex — t e part of the brain responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and reward patterns — is still under construction. 🚧

That matters because early drug use can actually rewire the brain, increasing the risk of addiction and long-term substance dependence. ⚠️

That’s why conversations matter. Talking with kids early and often about drug use helps build awareness, confidence, and healthier decision-making when peer pressure shows up. 💬

Show the kids in your life and practice refusal skills: refusing to drive after drinking, refusing to ride with anyone who has, and brainstorm solutions! Let the kids in your life know that is it perfectly normal NOT to drink - model this behavior by being the Designated Driver at family/friend events, uber if you’ve had a drink or edible - talking about it helps protect your family and community!

"This past October, our SADD students worked together to create a docudrama focused on the real life consequences of destructive decisions and the importance of making safe choices when getting behind the wheel.

Through acting, storytelling, and collaboration, students shared a powerful message with their peers and community. We are proud of the time, effort, and leadership our students demonstrated while bringing this project to life!"

Signs to watch out out for:

Addiction is Real, Inc.’s Volunteers are reducing the stigma surrounding addiction by sharing their stories at events, on social media and in the news. Zack and his mom have been a part of our team for years - we appreciate his willingness to be interviewed for this piece. Thank you, David Amelotti, for keeping a close eye on area opioid remediation funds and exposing improper spending (like the snow plow purchased in a St. Louis county community). The stat David reported - 80% of the inmates at the St. Charles County jail are dealing with an opioid/substance use disorder - is stunning. We are happy to hear St. Charles County has included medication assisted therapy, and peer support in their plans for the jail’s renovation using the funds the county has been awarded. No one chooses the life Zack has lived - this disease is horrible - he is doing so much to help others by working with our team ♥️ solid job Fred Rottnek!

A jail expansion will serve dozens of inmates.
