Second Lady Usha Vance responds to a student's question about how to be the best Second Lady: "I think they key thing, for anyone who is in this kind of role, is to try to just continue to be yourself. You have to do the best job that you can. And there are some responsibilities that come with it...you don't always choose what you are doing...But the most important thing is to remember the kind of person that you were before it, and the kind of person you want to be. If you can do that all the way through, then you can have a lot of fun — and maybe be helpful. You don't want to just start thinking of yourself as the Second Lady, because then you're probably not that fun a person anymore."

I made a post yesterday that made me laugh, because I’ve been blessed to know so many law enforcement officers who I could just picture chuckling and saying, “That’s about right.”

The meme read: “Whoever said being a cop is stressful? I’m 39 and I feel great!”—paired with a photo of a man who looks about 80.

It’s hard to explain why that feels so spot-on unless you know the kind of people who:

* Can laugh at life—and themselves.
* Carry stress with a strength that allows humor to coexist with hardship.
* Serve day after day in ways most of us never see—facing humanity at its worst, and often being hated not for who they are, but for the uniform they wear.

I wouldn’t have understood that mix of humor and reality without my years with Chris. He used to say law enforcement officers “deploy every day,” and I saw firsthand how that constant toll reached not just the officers, but their families, too.

Colton, McKenna, and I have also had the gift of inheriting Chris’s law enforcement family—friends like Sheriff Bill Waybourn (pictured here)—and adding new ones of our own. Through them, we’ve witnessed what true hearts of service bring to the world, both on duty and off.

So let me ask you: Who have you met through your loved ones who has inspired you? What unexpected bridges have been built in your life because of the people you’re connected to?

That’s legacy. And it matters more than we think. Let’s be intentional about who we welcome into our lives and how they shape the world our families live in.
