HORRIFYING VIOLENCE AT SSM HEALTH DePaul HOSPITAL! 🏥
St. Charles County Missouri Scanner Traffic
On July 11, 2022, a horrifying act of violence unfolded inside the emergency department at SSM Health DePaul Hospital in Bridgeton, Missouri. Authorities said 33-year-old Jimissa Rivers entered the triage area carrying a large butcher knife and launched an unprovoked attack on healthcare workers who were simply doing their jobs caring for patients. The incident shocked the St. Louis region and became one of the most severe assaults on hospital staff in local history.🏥
Triage nurse Tammy Scott suffered catastrophic injuries during the attack. Rivers allegedly approached Scott from behind and stabbed her in the right side of the head and neck, severing her carotid artery and damaging her facial nerve. Despite being critically wounded and rapidly losing blood, Scott demonstrated extraordinary courage and determination by applying pressure to her own wound and walking herself into the main medical area for emergency treatment. Her survival was considered remarkable given the severity of the injuries she endured.🏥
Paramedic Kayla McMahan immediately rushed in to help protect her fellow healthcare worker. During the struggle, Rivers turned the knife on McMahan, stabbing her behind the head and in the back. The injuries caused a punctured lung and bleeding around her heart. McMahan’s willingness to intervene in such a dangerous moment likely prevented even greater tragedy, and both women were widely praised for their bravery and resilience throughout the aftermath of the attack.🏥
The violence was finally stopped when a man in the waiting room tackled Rivers and restrained her until hospital security personnel arrived. Investigators later stated that the bystander’s quick actions almost certainly prevented additional injuries or deaths inside the emergency department. The attack deeply traumatized hospital employees, patients, and first responders who witnessed the scene unfold in a place normally associated with healing and safety.🏥
The criminal case lasted nearly four years before reaching its conclusion on April 13, 2026. Rivers pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree assault and received concurrent 20-year prison sentences in the Missouri Department of Corrections. During court proceedings, Rivers stated she had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2021 and had remained on medication while incarcerated. Tammy Scott acknowledged during sentencing that failures in mental health treatment systems contributed to the tragedy, while still emphasizing the devastating and lifelong impact the attack had on the victims.🏥
For Tammy Scott, the consequences were permanent. The severe nerve damage and emotional trauma forced her to retire from the healthcare profession she had dedicated her life to serving. Her story became a powerful symbol of the dangers healthcare workers increasingly face in emergency settings. Many people throughout the St. Louis area expressed deep sympathy for Scott, recognizing that she survived an attack that could easily have been fatal while displaying extraordinary strength under unimaginable circumstances.🏥
The stabbing ultimately led to major policy and security changes throughout St. Louis County hospitals. According to the victims, staff members had repeatedly requested stronger protections before the attack occurred. In response, DePaul Hospital quickly installed around-the-clock armed security in triage areas and added metal detectors at entrances. The case also directly influenced the creation of a specialized healthcare violence prosecution unit within the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, ensuring future assaults against nurses, paramedics, and medical staff receive enhanced prosecutorial attention under special victim guidelines. 🏥
You may be seeing Tammy Scott, formerly of St. Charles county, more often now. She’s speaking up! She’s recently been on podcasts, news stations, and is being a strong advocate for victims in the medical field who are assaulted. 💪
