Squires Volunteer Fire Department Official Update

Due to the overwhelming success of our recent online auction, the department has decided to move forward with an ambitious expansion into a tactical region we are less familiar with: Air Support.

While we looked into helicopters and tankers, we’ve decided to go a more cost-effective route. We recently acquired a large flock of military surplus pigeons through a federal equipment grant. These "Aero-Avian" units are currently being trained for precision water-drop operations.

Specifications:
Payload: 1.5 ounces of water per bird.

Navigation: Integrated homing beacons (they always return to the station for refills).

Cost: Very low (mostly birdseed and the occasional windshield cleaning).

Training for our new "Squires Air One" squadron begins this week. If you see a synchronized flock hovering over a brush fire, please do not be alarmed. It’s just the future of rural fire protection.

Elevated fire danger expected again today as gusty southerly winds up to 30 to 40 mph at times combine with a dry air mass. Elevated Fire Danger means that weather and land conditions are favorable for erratic fire spread, if a fire does start.

SVFD was toned out for 2 brush fires today, one on county road 315 and immediately after one on county road 409. Both were quickly contained with no damage to structures.

A big thank you to our Auto Aid partners City of Ava Fire Department -Missouri, Ava Rural Fire Department and Goodhope Fire Dept for providing mutual aid. Upon dispatch of the first fire, it was unknown if it was a structure or brush fire, so mutual aid was requested as a precaution and cancelled once the nature of the fire was determined.

Since units were still on scene at the first fire when the second fire was dispatched, Ava Rural was requested as backup and subsequently cancelled. We greatly appreciate our Auto Aid partners and the difference it makes in our community.

Yesterday afternoon, Squires Volunteer Fire Department responded as mutual aid for a heat related illness on the trail at Bryant Creek State Park. Fire crews worked closely with Douglas county deputies and Cox EMS to quickly locate and extricate the patient.

These trails can be a little challenging. Please take time for rehab and carry water/food with you.

Happy Birthday to firefighter Blaize Molton!!

Our online auction has officially wrapped up, and we are blown away by the results! To everyone who bid, shared our posts, or donated items: Thank you.

Running a volunteer department takes a village, and this weekend proved we have the best one around. These funds are the final piece of the puzzle to get our "new-to-us" trucks fully mission-ready. Your support ensures that when the call comes in, we have the tools to respond safely and effectively.

Stay tuned for photos as we get the new vehicles in service!
