A sky high celebration!!! Open House at Buck Rock Lookout, Sunday August 31st, 10-3
Grab the family and we'll see you there!
High atop a granite dome in the Sequoia National Forest stands one of the most remarkable fire lookouts in the American West. Buck Rock Lookout, perched dramatically above the surrounding landscape, opens its doors each year for a special celebration that draws visitors from throughout the region.
The annual Buck Rock Lookout Open House, hosted by the Buck Rock Foundation, has become a Labor Day weekend tradition, held on the Sunday of the holiday weekend from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This free public event transforms the base of the rock into a vibrant community gathering that celebrates the vital role fire lookouts play in early wildfire detection.
Local Wuksachi elder Johnny Sartuche will conduct a “Blessing of the Rock” ceremony to start the festivities, a beloved yearly ritual begun by Johnny’s father and Wuksachi elder Eddie Tupishna over 20 years ago.
Visitors can enjoy kids’ crafts, history and nature displays, and meet Smokey Bear. Indian Tacos and Lookout merchandise will be available for purchase.
The main attraction, of course, is the opportunity to experience an actual working fire lookout. Visitors can climb the stairs to the top of the rock for a guided tour of the lookout and unobstructed views of the High Sierra featuring the Great Western Divide and the Kings Canyon watershed.
The Buck Rock Foundation is instrumental in maintaining and operating this historic facility, along with other local lookouts, Park Ridge and Delilah, ensuring they remain viable for fire detection while staying open to the public for educational visits.
Mark your calendar for Labor Day weekend, and prepare to be amazed by the spectacular views, rich history, and warm community spirit that make the Buck Rock Lookout Open House a truly special event.
A high clearance vehicle is recommended.

Cindy and her friend went up the 172 steps up to Buck Rock Lookout this past weekend. Why you might ask? Not only because it is there, but for the experience of having one of the best views you can go to. You are welcome to visit Buck Rock when a lookout is on duty, between 10:30am and 5:00pm.

Not only do we watch for smoke, but fire lookouts watch for flowers, clouds and many other things. And how do our volunteer lookouts get paid? In sunsets and sometimes sunrises.
