” BUY IT WHERE YOU BURN IT”
Buy it where you burn it" is a slogan and a strong recommendation by the Maine Forest Service and other agencies to prevent the spread of invasive forest pests like the emerald ash borer and Asian longhorned beetle.

Moving firewood, especially across state lines or even within certain quarantine areas in Maine, can easily transport these destructive insects and diseases to new, uninfected areas.

Key Guidelines
Buy Local: Purchase firewood as close as possible to where you plan to burn it, ideally within the same county or region. You can find local vendors using resources like Firewood Scout.
Out-of-State Ban: It is illegal to bring untreated firewood from out-of-state into Maine.
Certified Heat-Treated Wood: If you need to transport firewood over long distances, the only legal option is to buy certified, heat-treated wood in a sealed package with a state or federal certification label (indicating it has been heated to 160°F for 75 minutes).
Don't Transport Leftovers: If you have non-heat-treated firewood left over, do not take it home or to your next destination. Burn it all within 24 hours or dispose of it responsibly at a designated facility.
Check Campgrounds: Many parks and campgrounds in Maine, such as Baxter State Park, have specific policies (some prohibit all outside firewood).
