LOMBARD ROAD CULVERT REPLACEMENT

**UPDATE** This culvert will be replaced today. Gravel will also be placed over a shallow culvert on Dill Valley Road. We do not anticipate the Dill Valley work to be a lengthy delay, but Lombard will be blocked for a few hours.

A contractor will be replacing a failed culvert on Lombard Road later this week. The road will be closed for the duration of the project, which may last a few hours.

Please drive safely and be aware that heavy equipment will be blocking the road.

Greetings all! We have removed the ropes and the roads are open and passable, though travel is still somewhat discouraged.

CAUTION: Shoulders are very soft still, and there are trouble areas. Be cognizant that passage may be very narrow in some places until we can have a contractor in to address them. Stay alert and drive slowly and safely, as near to the center of the roadway as possible.

Please note that Bottle Lake Road remains posted by the DOT, so save yourself the trouble of trying to schedule deliveries for a couple more weeks. This is also affecting our ability to line up contracted work.

As responsible camp owners and landowners we recognize that the woods that give us a place to camp and a peaceful place to have our cabins but they require our help to keep them healthy and productive. This is why we as members of SLOA must remember to

” BUY IT WHERE YOU BURN IT”

Buy it where you burn it" is a slogan and a strong recommendation by the Maine Forest Service and other agencies to prevent the spread of invasive forest pests like the emerald ash borer and Asian longhorned beetle.
Maine.gov

Moving firewood, especially across state lines or even within certain quarantine areas in Maine, can easily transport these destructive insects and diseases to new, uninfected areas.
Don't Move Firewood

Key Guidelines
Buy Local: Purchase firewood as close as possible to where you plan to burn it, ideally within the same county or region. You can find local vendors using resources like Firewood Scout.

Out-of-State Ban: It is illegal to bring untreated firewood from out-of-state into Maine.

Certified Heat-Treated Wood: If you need to transport firewood over long distances, the only legal option is to buy certified, heat-treated wood in a sealed package with a state or federal certification label (indicating it has been heated to 160°F for 75 minutes).
Don't Transport Leftovers: If you have non-heat-treated firewood left over, do not take it home or to your next destination. Burn it all within 24 hours or dispose of it responsibly at a designated facility.
Check Campgrounds: Many parks and campgrounds in Maine, such as Baxter State Park, have specific policies (some prohibit all outside firewood).

By following the "buy it where you burn it" principle, you help protect Maine's forests and natural resources for future generations.

Hello Fellow Landowners!

The time has come - spring is making its appearance, and roads are starting to break up.

The ropes and closure signs are installed.

The state and towns have posted roads for the spring season, and we will follow their lead. When the DOT weight limit signs come down from Bottle Lake Road and the gravel roads off Bottle Lake, we'll remove the ropes.

Please, if you absolutely must travel the SLOA network, replace the rope every time you pass. Travel is strongly discouraged.

With the temperatures rising and spring rains starting, mud season is very nearly upon us. We will soon add the ropes and road closure signage.

PLEASE - if you absolutely must travel any portion of the road network, replace the rope every time you pass it. If you see that a rope has been taken down and not replaced, we beseech you to take a moment to replace it.

Road closures are necessary to protect the integrity of our gravel roads. The ropes prevent mud season deliveries and hauling by heavy vehicles. The ropes also prevent individuals out for joy rides after a long winter from traveling and damaging our network.

For individuals with properties for sale, please alert your realtors. There have been at least three passenger vehicles stuck on snowmobile trails this season by joy riders and individuals looking at real estate offerings. Vehicle recovery and road damage from these events are both costly and unnecessary.

Roads will remain closed until the state and town remove the posted road signs.

SLOA Road Conditions Report

Status: Roads are currently open.

Maintenance efforts and improvement projects are actively under discussion with contractors. We appreciate your patience as we work toward scheduling and implementing needed upgrades.

Please exercise caution while traveling. Some areas remain rough due to early-season use prior to the removal of road ropes. Drive carefully and report any serious issues to the Board.

Thank you,
